Transmission Replacement

Recommended Posts

So as a result of the problem with my 05 LGT 5MT described here:

http://legacygt.com/forums/showthread.php/ticking-sound-car-locks-up-202227.html?p=4308423#post4308423

The place I took the car to told me they won't rebuild the transmission but they will replace it. Essentially, they don't have an exact idea of what is wrong because they haven't opened it. They know that it is infact the transmission and because of that, recommend replacing it altogether. They have a transmission from a 2006 2.5i with 80k on it for $1800 (+ Labor)

I was told that this is the exact same transmission that was put in the 05 GTs and was geared exactly the same.

Can someone confirm that these are the same transmission? All searches yielded no results.

It's not the same transmission. Different ratios, different final drive. You'd need a new rear differential to go with that transmission.

Gotcha. I'll just have them look for a different one.

Thanks, I'll bookmark that page, answers a lot of questions i may have in the future.

Or rebuild it. $1800 + labor is absurd.

A rebuild on a 5MT is ~$600 in labor. Parts are relatively innexpensive, depending on what broke. A full set of synchros is a few hundred bucks, same with misc. gears. For less than $1k, you could have a rebuilt box with no risk that your $1800 replacement transmission is a dud.

I spent $800 in parts for mine but had even things that looked near ok replaced. My buddy did it for $200 labor.

I did the R&R in the driveway.

305,600miles 5/2012 ej257 short block, 8/2011 installed VF52 turbo, @20.8psi, 280whp, 300ftlbs. (SOLD).  CHECK your oil, these cars use it.

Interesting. As a side note the case my current transmission is in is brand new which would be a shame to scrap. The brass ring on the top of the last one was destroyed so the transmission was rebuilt into this one about 75 miles ago. The work was done at no charge as an act of good will by someone who sold it to me as is. A specialist did that job.

The mechanic who is working on it currently found 2 more used ones, one with 100k on it for 1700 and one with 119k on it for 1500. I said I'd take the one with 100k but maybe it's not too late to change my mind. It does seem a little expensive. I could have the mechanic take my transmission out, and I could bring it to a specialist to have them rebuild it but I have a feeling they would end up charging around $1000 in labor. The specialist i talked to quoted me 2700 for putting in a used tranny with 75-100k labor included, and wouldn't give me an estimate on a rebuild because they havn't seen it.

I was told very few people are capable and willing to rebuild one of those trannys and it is easier to just replace it. Having a guy who can do it for a reasonable price changes everything though.

$1700 is absurd! Take the car somewhere else. Who told you its hard to rebuild this transmission? The same guy wanting 1700 for one with 100k on it?

Yeah, Lake Region Imports. I was recommended by a local subaru specialist who doesn't work on turbo models (some specialist right...) to bring it there.

I really would like a mechanic who will do any job bumper to bumper for a good price but most people seem to be afraid to crack open the tranny. I also can't find someone who will rebuild my turbo (bad seal)

1700 IS a lot... I doubt that's what they are paying for it.

What's a good maximum to pay for something with 100k on it? 1300?

I have seen 5 speeds with less miles go for $1-1200 on this very forum. What area are you in? Post in your regional forum and they can probably recommend you a shop that will do the job right.

Pull it in your driveway and ship it to Andrewtech for a rebuild.

Call them: 240-683-1000

I appreciate it, and will keep them in mind.

I found a used tranny with less than 50k for $1000 delivered from Limestone here in Maine. It was pulled from a car that was less than 2 years old. I think this will be the easiest and fastest solution.

I will probably sell the old one, it had a brand new case like i said, which is worth something alone.
