Head Gasket job on my 98 GT Wagon

Recommended Posts

The helicoil was a success! I didn't get a pic of the process, but it went together just fine.

So to the back of the engine, yes there's a cover plate. And it was leaking like me after 5 beers. So some cleaning and re-siliconificationisticism...

Tonight, we put the engine back in.

Tomorrow, I get the fluids required (Subaru Coolant, Rotella synthetic), make sure the battery's charged, and we hopefully get it started when my man gets off work.

Quick votes from the experts:

DO I GET SUBARU COOLANT OR IS SOMETHING ELSE (Peak Global, for example) JUST FINE TO USE?

Recommendations welcome... but I need to decide today, the engine is in and I want to get this thing started tonight.

Gallon of full strength Peak or Prestone etc. Make the 50% dilution yourself.

Pour in block from top radiator hose first. You'll have some left over for future usage.

Follow rest of porcedures for burping.

It doesn't have to be any special version? Just regular and do the 50/50 mix myself... I can handle that!

Cleaned it up a little under there while I wait for the final steps...

Good to know for the future... for now, I have to settle for the Peak.

Last night, we managed to get the rest of it back together. Filled up the oil (Rotella T6), the coolant (Peak) and the power steering pump (a different one, as my old one was leaking).

Advance Auto charged up my battery for free, too!

Connected it, turned it over a few times to build oil pressure, connected the fuel pump and turned the key...

STARTED RIGHT AWAY!

(Was going to post video, but photobucket is being photoSUCKet)

After some cautious optimism, some inspecting, and quite a while of warming it up and filling coolant post bubbles, we took her out for a spin, as well as some well deserved gasoline.

It didn't overheat, ran great.

The only problems I seemed to notice are relatively minor. The power steering pump was making some ugly noises. But then again, the system probably has a bunch of air in it.

The brakes were needing some scrubbing from 6 weeks of downtime.

And the axle, which needs to be replaced, still sounds pretty bad.

Today's minor details to attend to are the battery tie-down (which I lost) and connecting my subwoofer to the second battery terminal (an idea which never occurred to me the first time I did it).

Power steering is still not working. We swapped the pump for a different one that doesn't leak. But the fitting wasn't correct, so we swapped that as well. Guess that was a mistake.

Now I have to either rebuild this one or try another. But the gasket job appears to be a success!
