Max Capacity
I think it's two on here. I know one was because the gap on outter guides was not correct someone said. I think you could see in the picture that was where the wear was. I think the other was a pulley. I know when I did mine with the dayco pulleys, I had to use a washer or two the space one of the pulleys out so the belt would hit it in the proper location. 305,600miles 5/2012 ej257 short block, 8/2011 installed VF52 turbo, @20.8psi, 280whp, 300ftlbs. VermontGT
The belts are fine, it was more of an issue with the Tensioner, Idlers/Pulleys. I called metro performance this morning and they also confirmed, adding that OEM on the parts is the way to go (Gates belt okay, but Tensioner, Idlers/Pulleys, water pump should be oem). Both shops have a good reputation here in denver. One shop has built USRC/Rally America Rally cars and the other has the fastest sti in the state (10.59). That's two well known shops in denver saying no. Maybe it has to do with how their customers drive their cars? FWIW, there are a couple companies out there who re-box OEM parts and sell them as timing belt kits. Nitoma is one. Flennor is another. If you want an OEM equivalent water pump, find yourself a Paraut. For a tensioner, I would look for Koyo, NTN, or equivalent.

MAP
I installed the timing belt kit this past December. The car was at 105k and the belt looked good.(I bought it at 69k) Not knowing if everything had been replaced, I decided to install the Gates kit. Good thing I did. The belt, tensioner and water pump appear to have been good but the other rollers were clearly worn and a little noisy. All the rollers/pulleys in the gates kit were made in Japan. I believe NTK was stamped on most of them. The belt that was on the car was black on the outside but the inner teeth looked dark brown. The Gates kit I installed came with the blue belt. The teeth were black. I put a couple thousand miles on it so far and things are fine for now. I remember reading some time back about someone who's Gates belt(blue one) failed due to a water pump bolt that came loose. They said they hadn't torqued the bolts. I'm betting that they probably got it down finger tight and forgot to tighten it with a ratchet. There's 2 screws on the water pump that are hidden. tdelker
I put in a gates kit about 3 weeks ago. Sounded good for a while. Now I get very loud 'piston slap' on a cold engine but I'm wondering if maybe it's the tensioner. This morning I went to listen, but didn't hear anything. As soon as I start driving it seems like the sounds gets a lot less, although that might have something to do with pulling out of the garage. Is there an easy way to tell the different? I will say, I do live just North of Denver.
AZP Installs
i see most people using the subaru tensioner with the gates belt We've installed probably 200+ Gates kits and the tensioners haven't failed yet. I actually think they are made by the same bearing company that makes the Subaru ones but don't quote me on that. -Mike Paisan http://www.pbase.com/paisan/image/91072632.jpg http://www.pbase.com/paisan/image/145749898/original.jpg http://www.pbase.com/paisan/image/133406601.jpg http://www.whiteline.com.au/images/logos/perf1.jpg 11+ Years Maintaining, Modifying and Educating TriState Subaru Enthusiasts.
