Down Pipe Quality and fitment?

Recommended Posts

^True. The PW is also pretty nice (for a TMIC). But still overkill. An AVO fits the bill for 99.99% of users who want a TMIC. Especially street cars. Cheaper than a PW and can be installed in a jiff by a DIY'er. Fits as close to stock as anything. Far more "stealth". I have run a AVO on my car twice with great results. Meaning I have installed two different AVO TMIC on my car over the years with different set ups. When I wanted a TMIC, it worked like a champ.

Agreed, we like the AVO TMIC and regularly install those as well. We actually have not installed any PW ones, probably due to $.

I run a PW TMIC, full Invidia Q300 3" Turbo back exhaust, Invidia catless UP. Exhaust had NO fitment issues, PW TMIC, I needed to space and modify the Passenger side mount bracket to get it to work, also comes with correct "deflector/inside scoop" that required me to drill several holes, no biggie and it comes with all hardware as does the Invidia system, yes all are a bit pricey but it's not like I change them every year, there a 1 time purchase. Also drilled a hole and installed a Air/Fuel wide-band sensor, welded bung to pipe no-problem, great material, personal choice I guess, not considering the cost.

P.S. As far as the TMIC, I run a 5EAT, I have heard some folks having issues with the Clutch Master cylinder. FYI

Deff pricey on the PW. Once you pop the hood, it screams aftermarket. Works well for a TMIC. As long as your BOV is not too tall no worries on clearance. Have installed a few and tuned more. But, I dont sell them. Sorry.

PW appears top be another very well made product for Subarus coming out of Australia. Real racing has its advantages. Product development.

Yuppers, that's why we don't sell too many products that we haven't used on track or a race team we know and trust has used on track.

yes fmics have their place, however, a track car is a very different beast than any street driven car.

I found the timing advance from tuning while swapping to FMIC made the car more plesant to DD off boost (not saying thats a good reason to go FMIC, merely remarking).

Personally, I much prefer the better "packaging" of a TMIC setup.

I totally agree when it comes to something like the AVO but honestly am not impressed with the PW (or its clones) at its pricepoint. IF there were a gynormous scoop in our hood and IF the turbo was not underneath it and IF it fit more cleanly and if it looked like something other than a radiator slapped on top of the motor but thats a lot of "if" when there are other, more reasonable options... If I need to replace the OBXT oem TMIC for any reason I was planning to go AVO TMIC just for ease of install and oem appearance..

What years STI up/dp fit and is there better year to try and find?

All years for the UP, '08+ for the DP, same with WRX. Note that there a very few downpipes for '08+ STi / WRX that come close to the bulkhead in a Legacy, or just touch. They can be 'pursuaded' but better avoid that if possible. Can't help you with which brands though. The ones I've seen were all no-name products.

Obligatory 'build thread' Increased capacity to 2.7 liters, still turbo, but no longer need spark plugs.

When getting a aftermarket DP do you guys replace the heat shield?

I already have a STi UP and am currently looking at the CNT DP. I did some reading about turbo blankets and heat shields (looking at the Grimmspeed heat shield) and still on the fence what to do about the heat.

Any thoughts?

FWIW, My Invidia dp uses the oem heat shield.

Unless you can find info that say's different, install the dp and see if the oem heat shield will fit. The shield mounts to the bracket on the top of the turbo...So I'd guess it should fit.

305,600miles 5/2012 ej257 short block, 8/2011 installed VF52 turbo, @20.8psi, 280whp, 300ftlbs. (SOLD).  CHECK your oil, these cars use it.
