juniorvarsity33
Hey guys, the day before yesterday I replaced my ac and p/s belts after noticing some missing ridges on outer edge of belts (veh is at 87k mi). I used this link as I've never done it before: http://www.subaruoutback.org/forums/99-do-yourself-illustrated-guides/16229-serpentine-belt-replacement.html It seemed very easy to do and I did it with no problems... at first. 2 days later, when pulling into my driveway my steering wheel was shaking as I was turning and it sounded like belts screeching in my engine comp. After parking and opening hood, I could confirm that noise as I turned wheel lock to lock while parked. So my question is, what may have I done? Belts too tight? Too loose? They weren't rubbing when I installed them 2 days ago. And 2 days of driving with no probs. It is rather cold up here right now, so I was gonna attribute the squeal to that (even though BRAND NEW belts) but the steering wheel shaking has me nervous to drive much until I get it figure out. I didn't wanna pay $75 for something that cost $30 for parts and seemed easy to do. Thanks for looking, and any and all assistance. 2005, 2.5i, 87k mi. chutrain
Sounds like they might be a little loose. Tighten a little more and see if the noise goes away. How much play do you have?
dease42
Had the EXACT same thing happen. Ended up tightening both the belts and it went away completely. Sometimes they give a little after they're installed. Just do it in small increments and you should be fine.
GTTuner
A belt that has run for 10-15 minutes is considered used. They stretch after a few minutes. The rib'd serp belts need a little more tension that v belts do.
YourConfused
Yep, as the above stated. Belts are rubber and will stretch a bit during their initial run time. Just tighten them up a bit.
