I know a guy that got a used A6 and had it for a few months when the tranny went out. The dealer quoted him $12K to get it fixed. He ended up getting a used tranny from a junkyard and getting it installed...still cost him $6k in total...

I like Audis, but I'd only lease them personally...

Well, I am coming out of a 2002 Audi Allroad lease. I could have purchased it for a couple of grand less than picking up the 05 LGT. To tell you the truth, while the thought occurred to me, I saw absolutely no point in keeping the Audi. It has not been reliable. Constant problems with electronics, brakes, rattles, trim pieces falling off (despite the apparent high quality materials). I would not want to own that car out of warranty. That being said, I already had the rotors resurfaced on the LGT at 500 miles, so I hope that is not an indication of its reliability.

Oh, and I should add that the new 2006 A6 is a beautiful peace and Audi is supposedly making improvements on reliability, but it is more expensive now. I would gladly lease one if money was no object. But given that I can get just about everything I want in a wagon with an LGT, I did not think it was worth the extra money.

Im faced with a decision and i would like some input from you guys...

My next vehicle is either going to be a black on black(or grey) 05 LGT (auto)

or

an 02-03 black on black(or grey) Audi a6 2.7t quattro

Now ive done my reading, and taken alot of things into consideration...

Personally ive come to the LGT conclusion, but alot of my friends seem to think that im crazy (thats an understatment).

Power wise i hear jus a reprogram on the 2.7t is amazing.. (but ive yet to find actual quatermile times or 0-60 with it)

Any input?? Advice??

That is not a bad idea. Check out http://www.audiworld.com. However, being a former Audi guy, I can tell you that people will talk down the legacy simply for being a Subaru and have not really given the LGT any consideration. In fact that was my opinion, until I drove the LGT.

why don't post the question on a audi forum and see what they have to offer?

Going to the Audi forum may give valuable insight into Audi owners experience, not good info about Subaru LegGT.

When I was an Audi A6 Quattro wagon owner, the Audi forums were full of bad stories and poor response from Audi. Class action law suites about repeat turbo failures and the latest class action about unreasonable front apron damage caused by nose heavy design and poor suspension.

Audi offered us one year of extended warrantee because two years into a $40k+ car, they could not get the gas gauge to work. This can be very dangerous in So-Cal. Imagine your wife running out of gas on a busy freeway with part of a little girls soccer team in the car and the gas gauge shows half a tank left. Imagine that this was after two years of multiple fixes. No matter how attractive Audi "design" may be, never again for Audi in our family. Two Audis, two lemons.

I got rid of my 01 S4 for the GT and yes the S4 was better in fit, finish and faster but the Subaru has a lot more going for it: reliablity, resale value, cheaper to maintain, cheaper ins.(120/month for 01 S4, now 90/month for 05 GT, with same ins. coverage) and mods are a lot cheaper :)

I came within a gnat's eyebrow of ordering a 2.7T A6 Q 6MT, but the reliability issues kept me in the Subaru camp. Just dial into your local Audi forum, choose your model and look at the reliability issues for each of the respective models. I purchase cars to drive, not to have them sit in the shop for weeks or even months on end, or make multiple visits back to the dealership for something that wasn't fixed right the first, second, third, fourth... time.

I like the quattro AWD but feel that newer model Audis depends too much on electronics, e.g., Electronic Diff Lock in place of true limited slip differentials. When you're replacing your brake pads and rotors, thank the EDLs for causing premature wear on your brakes.

And like others who have responded, I find the A6 2.7T to be nose heavy, prone to large understeer and not very engaging to drive. The LGT is nimble by comparison and revels in its comparative 'lightness" when wailing through a turn or even stop and go daily driving or auto-xing. Everything about the LGT registers in the performance category, acceleration, braking (some would disagree but this is a Legacy strong suite), handling, and has the reliability and good price to value quotient that you need.

Something about your comments seems to indicate that you're leaning toward the 2.7TQ. If I were to offer my son a suggestion, it would be to wait and save your money for a few more months. Then you would have time to really research what it is you really want and then you'd have enough $$$ to buy it, insure it, maintain it and mod it. However, if you want to take advantage of the LGT deals going on now, then I'd get down to the Subaru dealer and get that LGT you've been looking at before it gets away.

Bottom line, my concern is that the Audi will be a major money pit for you, taking all the fun out of owning it, and leaving you open to not so nice comments from your friends who are "encouraging" you now to choose the Audi over the LGT. Do the numbers now and down the road 12 months when something breaks, and see which vehicle comes out ahead. Unless the Audi is exceptional, here's betting your bank account on the LGT coming out way ahead in the short and long term.

Subietonic,

Being a present S4 and LGT Wagon (signed the papers today), I couldn't agree with you more on those words....

Thanks

Congrats on your new ride. I've been watching your discussion over in the Pre-purchase forum and saw that you were getting close. Make sure you post up some pics in the color specific forum.

Epitaph,

Whatever you decide to do, we're always ready to offer thoughts, comments and suggestions (remember, you asked :D ). And having re-read all of the posts in this thread, it seems like the majority vote (from Audi owners past and present and LGT owners who have tried on the Audis for size) is not to go with the Audi. We're not trying to induce Audi-phobia I'm sure, just want to be as honest and forthright as we can. And, BTW - Duramax diesel output (LB7 and LBY engines) can be power bumped (and varied) anywhere from 30-90 HP and up to 175 additional lb/ft of torque for $1200. Not too shabby.

Epitaph, no disrespect meant by my post. I can see how words like poser and grandma's car sounded condescending. This is not the first time my humor or attempt to make a post more than a drab response has come across critical. I should have used the phrase "style driven", not "poser".

I know the new BMW5 is a great machine, but I would not buy such an ugly car (IMO).

Good luck and let us know what you finally buy.

lol, i didnt take offense because im very far from a "poser" and you have no clue who i actually am so you dont know any better, its all good though, i shouldve notated that it'd be 02' bmw, not the 05. (whose body style i find less offensive then the new 3 btw)

im already a part of audiworld.com, been lurking there for over 3months now....

My boy has an a6 2.7 twin turbo he has the apr chip and the intercooling pipe to the throttle body and he ran a 14.0 @101 and he bogged at the launch.

Thank youuu

Thx for takin the time to give me a thought out response, i personally came to the LGT conclusion much because of the relibility (and i test drove one and wasnt all that impressed) but as the time draws nearer for my decision id like all the input possible.. As for the LGT deals, I wont be getting one "new" from the dealership so none of those apply to me... (two weeks ago a black/black 05EAT LGT with 6.7k miles sold for 22.8k at the auto auction)

hahaha, trust me, if i had that truck an $1200 i GUARENTEE i would be pumping out over 500hp/900tq easy.

That engine is amazing and its actually pretty modd-able (theres one "six gun" package that gives something like 183hp and 380tq) there is a diesel only truck shop mygirls brother works at an the owners lifted ford f350 runs 12s.

Don't even think about an out of warranty Audi. I have an A4 1.8T Quattro Avant which we have had for 2.5 years. Fine car when it works. Not so good when it doesn't. I hate to say but I have a good relationship now with our local indepentent Audi specialist. Not a relationship I want.

To give you an idea, in 2 1/2 years we have spent over $3,800 in servicing and repairs. That works out to an extra $127 per month!!

I'm waiting for the 06 LGT to come out and hopefully then I'll be able to sell this car to some other poor sap (our local dealers will not give good trade on it - guess no one wants 5+ year old audis). The interior is wonderful in an Audi but I would never buy another one....

I was impressed by the LGT, but the only thing that holds me back from it is the audio/air conditioning system, the inability to plug in Satelite radio and an MP3 player with out doing major work, and the lack of space and storage in the interior. I also have issues on the comfort of the seats. Still I would trade all that for a reliable fun car with a warranty!!

I did a 13.4 with my S4 with only a APR chip, in my twin brother's S4 i did a 13.2 with only a GIAC X chip, last month. ;)

LegacyTwin...

The best I have made out was 12.1, and that was on a 40F weather, so it helps...

Stage II MTM chip, bipipes, cold air intake and Borla exhaust. ;-) These things are fast, but to mod them, be prepared!!!

Overal I d prefer the LGT, for it's lightweight style and low gravity center...

You don't need it if you drive on cruise control all the time on Florida highways...

Even though the 5EAT made by whoever Jatco or Prodrive, is an awesome and quick shifting time trannie, 5MT or even better 6MT is the way to go with turbos!!!

At least IMHO!!!
