ruggerheist
what would be better in a southeastern PA winter? and the up/down side to each option. I want blizzaks but they come in the 2 options for approx. same price.
Mr. Sinister
I don't know what the conditions are like where you're at, but I went with studless ice and snow here in Chicago where the roads are plowed most of the time. My thinking is that I want tires that will get me through the worst conditions if I get caught out in a storm. You'll give up some dry performance, but I drive conservatively once the winter tires go on anyway.
ruggerheist
The past 2 winters were pretty crazy but PENNDOT does a decent job keeping the roads cleared
outahere
If ice traction is not a top priority, get a performance winter. If deep snow traction is not a top priority, get a performance winter. If dry/wet traction and hydroplaning resistance are a top priority, get a performance winter. StoplightAssassin
I run Conti DWS in the winter. You never know what it's going to be like. It's friggin 65 degrees today. If I were a doctor or firefighter I'd buy real snows, otherwise I just stay home and shovel the driveway.

Deer Killer
Nokian WR is the only tire I found appropriate. They say snow performance is "not good" after they are worn down past 4, but the sipes are designed to be useful all the way down to the wear bars. I tried it on snow thanks to a freakishly early snow storm and they were actually still better than all-seasons even with only 2mm of tread left. the Conti DWS is only a "DW" after basically one season. Even some of the other tires wear down the snow traction compound very fast... and they wear down whenever they are dry roads, even in the cold. That's just not acceptable.
