Kennyfvholla
I need to find a used rack to replace mine.. Does anyone know if the rack from an 03 WRX will swap into a 96 GT? Is there any benefit to even doing this?
subikid90
Benefits yes, I think you need to have the matching front sub frame, and make a custom attachment for the steering column to rack knuckle. -Subikid90 1997 Legacy GT 5spd & EJ251 w/EJ25D heads ~10.5CR 1998 Legacy GT Limited waiting for EJ22T hybrid swap
Baddog
Find a 90-94 LEgacy SS (turbo) rack they are faster and a direct swap.
Kennyfvholla
Crap.. I guess I'll skip on the WRX rack. I was supposed to of gotten my friends 93 SS by now but that's probably going to have to wait till the summer. Hopefully my rack holds up till then or I come across a cheap replacement.. Kennyfvholla
Well, I found a rack from a 94 Legacy SS for $100 shipped. I am going to find out how many miles on it, condition, etc.. Will this for sure fit 100%?? Is there anything I need to make sure that I buy with the rack itself??

Kennyfvholla
Yes, and those too. I need to find out how much those are....
Baddog
Whiteline rack bushings are like 40 bucks. I think they use 30mm ones btw. And yes from what I have read the SS rack is a direct drop in. So is the RS rack I believe.
David E
My steering rack is leaking and looking for a replacement, the SS rack sounds like a nice upgrade. In looking online it is asking for VIN numbers - see below.. Power Rack & Pinion, LHD, VIN models "4S3" & "4S4" Power Rack & Pinion, LHD, VIN models "JF1" & "JF2" Anyone know which would be correct, or how to specify the SS rack only? Is there a part number on the rack to check?
Kennyfvholla
Check out a vin de-coder and find out which code corresponds to the Legacy SS. I would do it but it's 7:34 and I'm barely awake at the moment and am too lazy to look..
mtcookson
This is an SS VIN - JF1BC6731PH605956
Kennyfvholla
Power Rack & Pinion, LHD, VIN models "JF1" & "JF2" Well, here's our answer!
maddoc
I looked up a rack on rockauto, and it uses the same part # for both GT and the 94 SS, so I don't think it matters.
Kennyfvholla
So you're saying that the racks from a 94 SS is the same as a second generation GT?
Baddog
No the SS has a faster steering ratio. They probably sell a universal part between the two.
Kennyfvholla
Do you know what the lock to lock is on the SS rack? My GT is about 3.3 turns.. I've driven a dang SS but I never bother to figure that out. It does change directions much quicker than my car though. WAY quicker.
Baddog
Not 100% on that. Whats odd too is my girlfriends 92 Legacy LS seems to steer faster then mine.
Kennyfvholla
I mean, the Legacy SS has a firmer suspension for sure. But for how much quicker it changes direction than mine, it can't just be the dampening and spring rate..
Baddog
Yeah I even have STI struts and springs. Turns nice but just not as "snappy" as her steering is with 06 WRX struts/springs
Kennyfvholla
Exactly.. And she doesn't even have an SS rack and you don't even have a GT rack. Hmmmm I'll see if I can find a FSM for a first gen in my dads collection
David E
I'm about to pull the trigger on a '94 SS rack. Has anyone confirmed the lock-to-lock on an SS is less than on a '99 Legacy?
