GT_Red
Hey guys, I have an '05 GT and was wondering if I have a catted up-pipe. If so, can I get a catless down-pipe and not throw a CEL or is it vice versa? It just seems if I can get away with just replacing the downpipe without the hassle of removing the upper to get rid of that cat, then...you see what I mean... blongo804
Whether you remove the up or downpipe you'll get a CEL. If removing the uppipe to replace with a catless one, you can do the resistor mod (search). When replacing a stock catted downpipe with an aftermarket catted or catless one, you need a tune, which will take away the CEL it throws.
NWSPECB
Yes your UP has a cat. Probably look into a catless UP before/at the same time as DP.
DWELLER02
Sorry to jump in there, but I am also trying to understand this. So IF you replace the Up with a CATLESS one and get a CATTED Downp, u still get CEL? What if u go CATTED for both up and down? Does it also effect the power that much if both are catted vs catless ? BigTDogg MA
You don't want a catted UP. It's bad news. You want a catless UP, and a catted DP. BTW, the resistor mod is for the EGT, not for the CEL thrown by a catless UP. You'll need a tune regardless
Dujo
In case it's not clear, the reason you want a catless up is because of the danger (likelihood) of the cat shedding a few pieces and having them sucked into the turbo --> blown turbo --> blown engine. I understand what you're getting at with the time/money savings with just doing the down and ignoring the up. And it's true that it is cheaper in terms of up front costs, but it is also a much riskier proposition, both in terms of chance of something bad happening and in possible scope of badness if something does occur. It is worth noting that you have to pull the down out of the way in order to replace the up, so if you are replacing up, the down labor basically becomes a sunk cost (free-ish). blongo804
BTW, the resistor mod is for the EGT, not for the CEL thrown by a catless UP. Thanks for clearing that up. It's been a while since I did that mod lol. I forgot about the ol' EGT.
DWELLER02
So the best thing is Catted Down and Catless Up, with a resonator mod or not? PLus im thinking catback exhaust, should pass, right? Cuz back on my Rs with borla headers and catback i could not pass inspection due to the sensor error :/.

AZP Installs
Passing state testing is very dependent on where you live. As everyone has said, catless UP and whatever DP you want to do will need some sort of tune to prevent CEL. With a Cobb AccessPort you can reflash the car to get a generic tune to drive the car and get it inspected without issue. However it is advised you get a Protune from a good tuner in your area. -Jake http://www.pbase.com/paisan/image/91072632.jpg http://www.pbase.com/paisan/image/133406601.jpg http://upload.pbase.com/image/137566671.jpg Call directly for your best Whiteline Price! | We also carry almost every manufacturer now, so before you buy parts call us. Thnx for the info Jake, Just one more dumb question, Should one do a tune BEFORE or after the install of said parts? Also are there any pro tunners in the NYC area? blongo804
I flashed my tune before driving my car after installing the parts. Best time to do it IMO. You shouldn't drive too much without a tune with fear of overboost if driving hard.
AZP Installs
Re flash the car AFTER parts are installed. If you run the car with just a tune it will run just as badly if you put the parts on and get no tune. Normally you can drive to a tuner on a typical stage 2 set up as long as you don't beat on the car going there. Around the NYC area we have always recommended EFI Logics in CT. They are great at what they do and are stand up guys. -Jake http://www.pbase.com/paisan/image/91072632.jpg http://www.pbase.com/paisan/image/133406601.jpg http://upload.pbase.com/image/137566671.jpg Call directly for your best Whiteline Price! | We also carry almost every manufacturer now, so before you buy parts call us. Tuning in our opinion requires for safety sake, a dyno and a lot of experience. Unfortunately, we don't have the capital to buy a dyno so that leaves us out of the tuning game right now. Eventually if we can muster up the $ to get a dyno we may dive into tuning but for now we have a great relationship with both EFI Logics and Precision Tuning and send our customers depending on their needs to both of those shops. Additionally, "road" tunes in our opinion are just not worth the risk since you have a tuner in the car trying to fiddle with tuning and you are driving at speeds well above the posted limits in order to accomplish it. These risks and variables can lead to at best a bad tune, at worst a bad lawsuit. -mike http://www.pbase.com/paisan/image/91072632.jpg http://www.pbase.com/paisan/image/133406601.jpg http://upload.pbase.com/image/137566671.jpg Call directly for your best Whiteline Price! | We also carry almost every manufacturer now, so before you buy parts call us.
