SpecBamf41
When i shift my 4eat hard or drop it into gear it makes some pretty funky noise. i have always wondered if its the tranny moving around on its bushings or if its internal.. ill shoot a vid real quick for the sake of hot laps. I Donated broknindarkagain Posted September 2, 2011 I Donated Share Posted September 2, 2011 its probably the transmission mount. -broknindarkagain My Current Project - Click Here COME AND TAKE IT "The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing." SpecBamf41
thats what i think too but sometimes i get more then one clunk. both my cars have done it. do the 5 speed get a clunk when you drop clutches? BNR18g on 93oct
I Donated broknindarkagain Posted September 3, 2011 I Donated Share Posted September 3, 2011 "dropping the clutch" can cause all kinds of problems lol You have 2 engine mounts, a torque mount, a trans mount, axles, and u-joints that can be damaged from dropping the clutch. -broknindarkagain My Current Project - Click Here COME AND TAKE IT "The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing." SpecBamf41
hard shifting can do the same. but hell. i cant seem to use anything without using it to its fullest. BNR18g on 93oct
Stang70Fastback
There's a difference between "using something to its fullest," and abusing and/or improperly using something. That having been said, Im going to agree with the broken transmission mount theory.
SpecBamf41
to replace them i just support the tranny and drop the crossmember and put new/better ones in? BNR18g on 93oct
I Donated broknindarkagain Posted September 8, 2011 I Donated Share Posted September 8, 2011 there is no "them" Its only one trans mount. And yes, support the trans, drop the mount, and bolt the new one up -broknindarkagain My Current Project - Click Here COME AND TAKE IT "The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing." stevenva
That noise is your car kicking you back. I don't think 4EATs like being treated as a manual. RIP 96 Legacy 2.2 4EAT lost reverse @ 374,000 miles
Baddog
It's electronic. It wont SHIFT unless its safe to. People have done it forever. Hell even first gens allowed you to manually shift. So that statement is well...false.
stevenva
BD Would you "drop shift" an automatic on a car you cared about like he's been doing RIP 96 Legacy 2.2 4EAT lost reverse @ 374,000 miles
Baddog
I have before. Once. But no I wouldn't. He is a boy racer though. We have known this since he was "AMP".
987687
I drop shifted my auto from redline once in dirt just to see what would happen*... It wasn't nearly as exciting as I though. When I did that with my old 5speed it spun all four wheels and took off, with this, it barely spun the wheels at all and took off. No better than brake boosting a launch, and a lot more risky. *I have a good 5speed, all related parts, a spare auto, a spare engine, and pretty much every spare driveline bit you can think of in my garage. my car has 240k and beat to hell. I don't care if I break stuff in my driveway...
SpecBamf41
i just drop it from 2k. once it drops into gear then i pin it. when the car is in N does the torque converter lock up basically dis engage? then engages in drive? I always thought lock-up only occurred at highway speeds, or when you put the shifter into like 1st or 2nd gear.
987687
Torque converter lockup only happens in 4th gear when you're cruising along. Stang, you might be thinking center diff lockup in 1st gear. It's closer to lock, but put it in first gear and do circles in parking lot. It doesn't bind like it's in 4wd. TQ stall is around 2k, so why not just put it in D, hold the brake. Pin the gas and let off the brake when you want to go. That's not really bad for the transmission (just don't hold it too long else you can overheat it). And provides the launch of the TQ. You'll get a lot more out of this than dropping it into gear at 2k, which doesn't really do much besides ruin the bands. You don't get the launch of the TQ doing it this way. SpecBamf41
and you can only get the binding if you do the true 50/50 mod. which reminded me i have to do that again with the wagon. BNR18g on 93oct
I Donated broknindarkagain Posted September 13, 2011 I Donated Share Posted September 13, 2011 Clit Commander, I think your transmission is going to die within the next 10K miles. You just need to do a 5MT swap -broknindarkagain My Current Project - Click Here COME AND TAKE IT "The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing." 987687
^ The 4eat is a surprisingly strong transmission. Chances are a flush and some adjustment of the bands will bring it back to new. It did for my 240k 4eat... The 4eat is a much more reliable and strong transmission than the 5mt. Quite frankly. Yes I like stick shifts better, and it's hard for me to admit this... but it's true.
