50% tint vs. 35% tint w/ black interior comparison

I know when I first started deciding what tint % to get, it was a tough decision. Here are our two cars with black interior; 2011 Legacy (35%) & 2011 Volvo S60 (50%).

35% seems to be the magic number for most drivers. It's dark enough, but still light enough where you still can be slightly seen. I will open up my sunroof shade to let more light in when I pass a police cruiser. I have 35% all the way around minus windshield. At first I thought it was too dark, but I got used to it and really like it.

We did 50% for my gf as she didn't want it too dark. 50% is very light. In direct sunlight, you can kind of tell that it's tinted.....In the evening hours, it definitely looks tinted. She pretty much never opens her sunroof shade.

Wow, 50% is barely tinted.

I am still torn about what % to do on my wife's tan interior'd Impreza. I'm leaning towards 20%. She isn't sure if 35% is going to be dark enough, but is worried that 20% will be too dark.

Not to be a pain, but can you do a full side shot (similar to the legacy) of the s60? Also could you take a night shot or two of the s60?

Am I the only one that still likes the 50% more???

Sure...I'll try and get some shots tomorrow after work.

50% does look good, just a very light tint.

35% is pretty dark. It's what I have. During really sunny days, I could definitely use some 15% instead because it's so damn bright. BUT if it was 15%, it'd be really hard to see at night. Driving straight with tinted windows is easy. It's when you make a turn and the roads are not always well lit and there are pedestrians on the road that make it dangerous. I drive in NYC all the time. Even at 35%, it's difficult to see out the side at night if there are pedestrians. I have to make an extra effort to make sure I don't run over someone.

Watch 20%... MD is a bitch about that, but I guess if its stock it probably won't matter much.

With a light interior, the tint is less noticeable, but you are right that MD is really a stickler for tint. On my car, it's no big deal. It's an SUV by registration, and the rears are stock at 20%. On hers, they might have a problem with it.

I've contemplated getting the 3M Crystalline 70 on the windshield. I have an eye doctor note for it, I just haven't made the decision to get it done yet.

I think I'm still going to get 50%'s all around. As soon as I can see some night shots of 50%, I think I'll pull the trigger.

It was hard to get good early evening pics due to glare, but here they are... I also took a picture of my neighbor's VW w/o tint for reference. Night shots aren't necessary as the tint will just look dark due to minimal exterior light.

When I had my tints done I was contemplating abiding NJ's law or not. =P

Choice was 35% all around, but when it came down to it I went legal for NJ as I am a resident there and NY for school. I ended up doing 20% all rears. Guy wanted me to do 5% on the rear window, but I really worried I couldn't see. The 20% is still visible for me out the back window and it gives the car a new look. =]

I thought about abiding as well, but couldn't stand the look of just the rears tinted.

Gotta pay to play.
