devilmademedoit
I have a question on the compression techniques on the 98' and up belt tensioners. When I put my jdm motor in my legacy, I swapped over parts that were on my old motor. The timing components being one of them due to the fact that they only had about 10k on them, but used a new belt so I could see the marks on it and they are cheap enough. The tensioner I compressed in my vise that is mounted on my bench not a vertical press. Was this a bad idea?
johnegg
i think it is only bad, if you compressed it too fast. you can blow out the seals if you do it too fast. i have never heard of anyone damaging a tensioner by doing it horizontally.

Osei
I think its a bad idea to re use tensioners....period The old style tensioners very rarely go bad. Check with anyone who regularly does Suby engines. The newer 2 piece style should be done at the same time interval as the t belt, every 105K. Not because of any known problem, but the question is will they last another 100K as they have a built in idler roller. The vertical method to compress is to keep the air at the top of the cylinder. Subaru revised it's technique during the 2nd gen time. I just use a c clamp and hang it on a door knob between turns. O.
