Inspecting Exhaust...

Recommended Posts

Since I hadn't really taken the time to examine the exhaust yet, I thought I'd bring it into the school shop & inspect the exhaust system. The constant hissing has been bothering me for a while now.

On the lift...

Hello, low-end TQ...

Hooked up to the smoke machine...

Leak found just after the resonator...

Now I have a few questions.

1 - Why does this car have 3 cats as opposed to my old L's 2 cats?

2 - Is it okay to remove that 3rd cat? I have a new exhaust coming in & it's going to bolt on right after the 2nd cat.

3 - This car seems to respond well to intake & exhaust mods. I don't drive the car any harder than I normally do (steady speed limit driving) but my engine has a bad rod bearing. I know it will go eventually but will my small mods put more stress on the engine even if I don't?

1 less tail pipe emissions

2 legally no, physically yes

3 yes, but you control the gas pedal

So if I welded up the new exhaust to be just after the 3rd cat, would that be alright?

how can you tell you have a bad rod bearing? is it knocking? having oil pressure problems?

Smoke machines ftw! lol

I'll put up a YT video when I get a decent video camera but it knocks pretty good during start-up & about 3000rpms+.

I was about to purchase a 22E shortblock & make another N/A dual cam 22E but I don't really know what I want to do. A 22E+T sounds good but then, I like having 30% extra displacement & adding lower compression pistons & a turbo to that also sounds good to me.

A turbo engine I can get at any time (only like 900$ if you're looking in the right place).. I just want to attack all of the minor issues in this car before I get started with that. In my previous Subarus, I focused on the small issues first, then modified the brakes, suspension, etc.

you think a exhaust leak could make a squealing sound when i really punch it.?. i really need to get a video and figure this out.

Are you sure there isn't a pig stuck in your fender? That would probably squeal.

And yes, an exhaust leak can make some funny noises. I've hear them squeal, whistle, scream, etc

I know what you are talking about. The hight pitched whistle. It's bot "normal," but many of these card develop it over time due to a small hole that develops over time. I think my friend said it is somewhere year the manifold, but I have yet to get under the car and look myself.

haha sweet.. i posted i topic aabout this early and i got crap for answers if any at all.

it never ran though my mind that the exhaust would do it.. i have uel headers laying around for when i do my exhaust. that should fix it..

btw.. do most exhaust pro shops use mendrals? i hate that they wont make me a catless section to replace the cats, like from header back to mid.. even then i would want just pipe from headers to bumper... just to see what i get for sound..

id have two axle backs. one staight pipe and one muffler.

i have noticed that it not easy looking to bolt and unbolt uel headers, would u recomend getting a u joint 1/2" drive?

Yes. That's how I was able to get the header on. You can probably do it without that but you'll fight with it more. The biggest issue was the header being a not-quite-perfect fit. Start with getting the header bolted to the heads first then bolt it to the cat. You'll have to use a little muscle but you can get it on.

I'm going to look into heat wrapping mine because I feel it's a bit too close to the oil pan.

Have you seen the new N/A subarus? The exhaust manifold is literally right against the oil pan. I have a pic of it somewhere. Let me find it

This is an 09 Outback. Exhaust is REALLY close to the oil pan....and it basically hugs the oil fliter too.

Lookatmyrust, your exhaust sound ftw. Period. I hope the exhaust system that's coming makes my car sound close to that or just like it.

brokindarkagain, those first 2 pics pf Subaru's 09' exhaust manifold made me choke on my soda. I'd slap the idiot who designed that. You have to use a TOOL to grab the oil filter & pull it out? Even with my UEL header, I can still reach up & grab it after I've waited for it to cool down.

How do they expect the oil to be at optimum temps during operation?

Mine was beastly for not putting new headers or really anything but the muffler [ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SsoQyo8N5ew&feature=mh_lolz&list=WLBF73EE3CE9C14B22]‪supper 44‬‏ - YouTube[/ame]

I couldn't get my hand in there without burning the living shit out of it.
