Which rotors / pads to purchase?

msilin

Recommended Posts

I just ordered Centric Premiums and Stoptech pads for my Legacy. I wanted the Premium rotors since they are coated. If you live where they salt the roads you'll probably want the premium/coated rotors so the top hats don't rust so bad. Otherwise you can get the standard rotors.

I found a good deal on rockauto.com . 55 for centric premium fronts 40 for centric premium rears plus shipping. I just couldn't figure out what pads to buy from this site. So maybe it was meant to be for me to purchase separately.

Would you guys recommend this site?

I just got Hawk HPS pads from Mike at AZPinstalls. $95.00 shipped. I'll put them on this weekend.

I would get the Hawks over the Stoptech. I've been very unimpressed with the sets of stoptechs we've installed for clients. We even changed a set of those out shortly after the initial install for HPS pads.

Thanks for the plug Max!

I'm planning on installing the centric premium rotors and Stoptech street performance pads on Saturday. I read lots of posts and it seems to me that some people love hawks and hate Stoptech and then there's about as many who love Stoptech and hate hawk. I haven't used both so I can't compare. I opted for Stoptech because from my research they may be better on cold stops than hawk HPS and they are cheaper.

Anyone know how good other make rotors are? Rockauto also sells Beck Arnley, Raybestos, and Wagner. Partstrain sells EBC, Brembos, DBA's, and others.

The Raybestos 'advanced technology' rotors have a 3 year warranty, the Centrics only 90 days, and they are about the same price. Rockauto also lists the Raybestos in a higher performance category than the Cenrtic Premiums.

hi everyone, not really a regular user here but i was hoping to get some advice. my 05 LGT, stock everything except for a relatively new ACT clutch, recently started to get this vibration at about 50mph...felt like i had a flat.

here's a video i tried to shoot and you can tell just a bit

[ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3vmOO2Csck4]‪Subie noise‬‏ - YouTube[/ame]

i took it to a shop, and they think it is because one of the front left brake caliper pistons is not decompressing, so a part of my pad is up against the rotor. wheel appears hotter than others. i've got 90k miles, and they quoted me $1,050 for a complete change up of calipers, pads, rotors for both fronts and a brake flush. they're obviously quoting Monroe types, nothing great, so i'm balking at the cost. any thoughts as to what i should do? if i need to spend this much, can i get something more of an upgrade? these guys are charging me $850 in just parts.

i don't track or race (spirited driving at best), and have taken my car across the country. oh, and the new stuff has to work with temp range starting at -20 degrees F (that's right, negative 20).

thanks for your feedback, and sorry if i've posted in the wrong thread.

That is crazy to do that. Have them replace the one sticking caliper.

Where are you located? If you are anywhere near NY/NJ we can help you out and for a TON less than that.

thanks Mike. i was at work when they took it apart and looked at it, but apparently this action has worn my pads/rotors. they're saying i should replace both fronts, which i get, but still. i'm in IA, and unfortunately, there arent that many experts around here. specifically on that line item, they're quoting me $360 for a pair of front calipers before install labor. i'm just thinking that if i'm gonna replace it, i should do it right.

given wore pads/rotors, do you think i should still just replace the one caliper? got any recommendations on what you would (besides what you already said) if it was a replacement? thanks

You only need to replace the bad caliper, but replace rotors and pads in sets.

It's not difficult to do. Do you have a spot at home you can work on your car? A new (refurbished) caliper should be well under $150 after core fee (return of your bad caliper to be rebuilt). Plan on about $300 for all 4 corners to get Centeic Premium rotors and Stoptech pads. Add about $50-75 if you go with hawk pads.

Find someone local to teach you how to install and pay them with food and drink. Now you know how to do brakes and are out less than half what the shop is quoting you and you have better parts to boot!

Order from AZPinstalls, or any other vendors on here.

Just a couple vendor classifieds:

http://legacygt.com/forums/showthread.php/legacy-brake-sale-dba-stoptech-hawk-136564.html

And, FWIW, I got all four corners of Centric Premium rotors, Hawk HPS pads and Goodridge SS lines with flush done and installed by AZP for well under $1k :)
