hansvonaxion's JDM 1996 Legacy GT-B

Recommended Posts

When you have a chance, can we get a shot of those calipers in the car? I would love to do the same thing with my car, only use silver paint for the lettering to match my wheels.

I think the gold came out pretty well, needs a touch up, but I'm not happy with the caliper paint I bought, it's supposed to be carbon metallic but it has a greenish tinge to it and isn't that metallic.

Is this OK? Just had ime for a quick snap after I'd finished.

I really enjoy this work in progress thread.

Thanks. I'm thinking I'll be doing less work from now on and spend more time trying to enjoy driving. Just clean up/finish up a few things and try to get to a track to have bit of fun.

Now I'm stoked just to get all the rims/tyres out of the back. :spin:

Nice Wagon! very clean. glad to see I'm not the only person adding sound deadening/dead weight in appreciation of quality sound.

Yeah I was a bit reluctant but it was probably only 1-2kg total and the difference is huge. Now I just wish I had better control of the sub.

If you need parts I will try to find them for you. Tell me what parts you want, I will give you a price.

It's easier to get parts from aftermarket suppliers (Prova, Zero/Sports etc) than Subaru parts (e.g. your 315mm brake discs).

The 4 pots are a definite improvement, I actually have confidence that I'm going to stop when I press the pedal. Probably the best mod I've done so far.

Best mod so far; a little bit of electrical tape on the back of the steering wheel to stop the rattle that was driving me nuts. Seriously.

The lighter rims are noticeable, and the other day when accelerating past the changeover I didn't notice any VOD, thought I might have had the sequential controller left on 5000rpm but no... I remember describing it after I first bought the car as like "changing gear, slowly" but after the mods I've made it's almost unnoticeable in most situations, still drop into when changing up sometimes though.

Went back and took a couple of shots at the same place as the ones in the OP.

I got the wiring figured out and installed the Morettes today. Not too happy with the gap on the side and because of the length of the HID bulbs I had to remove my battery tray to get enough room to even install them.

Need to clean up the install and seal them properly yet.

The beam is really focussed, can't find the pic I took of the stock projectors right now, will post it to compare when I do...

Haven't updated for a while. Put the RFRB grille on that I have for sale to see how I like it. Wasn't the one I wanted but I think it might be OK...

Also had to polish the Morettes cos they started to fade again. Left is before, right is after...

Your subi looks great

I have a rhd in reno nv USA

I want to get some jdm parts cause mine is hella stock looks boring

Thanks. Just let me know when you want something and I'll see what I can do.

I want some JDM tails and garnish, but I'm not in a hurry to buy. $200 is too much right now.

Did you post in the right thread? Seems a bit out of place. :)

The garnish is the killer, it's so big, hopefully the guy who contacted me about it grabs it soon so I can stop looking at it and then I just have the tails to get rid of.

I did pick up some rear spats and Prova bonnet dampers recently if anyone's interested PM me.

Also I think I found the grille I want for my car but it needs to be painted, I wanted black plastic like the RFRB.

You were talking about how you could find parts, and I was drinking beers, and the rest is history. ;)

Can I hit you up for some JDM tails and garnish in the future? :) Maybe I can afford just the tails soon. I broke my wind shield, need an alignment when I install my new struts and H&Rs, and need new tires, lol.

No problem, I just wasn't sure where the amount came from.

Still haven't had an alignment done after fitting my coilovers, they want about $250 for it. Also got a chip on my windscreen but luckily it hasn't grown yet, probably because I hardly ever get over 20mph.

So the other day it was hot and raining so I had the window cracked, touched the brakes and got the waterfall into the cabin... again! Went home that night and bought the first set of rain visors I could find. Will try to put them on this weekend, is there a DIY floating around? Just not sure where the metal parts go but I figure it will be pretty self explanatory when I take a look.

hey mate! realllly nice legacy. would you be able to take a close up of those headlights for me? id like to see if there any different to mine! thanks

What particular part?

I figured I'd use the clips instead of just stick it on cos I didn't want to break them trying to take them off and they help hold it in place when you tape it. But the driver's side I installed a little low and one clip caught on the window so I had to bend it out of the way and the bigger central clips that get screwed in on both sides seem to push or twist it enough to prevent the tape from sealing properly. I think I've got it sorted, fingers crossed.

They work well, I can open the window quite a bit depending on the wind and severity of the rain. Did get some wind noise from the passenger's side with the windows up though. Hope it was just cos of the wind or something.

Under rainbow bridge.

Made a custom grille because I haven't been able to find the one I want. Not 100% happy but close. I think painting the inner section a different colour to the outer part that was chrome might have added some needed contrast (still could do it), and a badge might help.

juvechan asked about plasti-dipping so here's a quick write-up...

Plasti-dipping, well I've decided I hate the stuff. If it were $7 a can like in the US I'd love it, but it's just not worth over $30 a can like it is here.

It isn't always as easy to peel off as it looks, especially if the surface is sanded or the coat is too thin- it won't peel off easily at all.

It isn't that easy to get a consistent finish, especially on surfaces that aren't flat, like a grille.

Any kind of "sharp" edges are a weak point, like the edges of the rain visors or the headlights.

The finish is rubbery (duh), so makes it a bit tricky to clean/wipe over with a cloth, you just need to let it air dry I guess.

Having said that,

A lot easier to mask and clean up than regular paint.

Very cool that you can keep the original finish in tact if you want, like the Morette housings I didn't want to sand to paint.

Survived the drive through car wash so pretty tough.

Few random tips;

Try it out first to get a technique that works for you, better to waste half a can than 3.

I found I often got better results laying a thick coat (until it gets shiny) but if you go too far then it can "wrinkle".

Also got a good result from a few thin coats on the headlights but it peeled off and I had to re-do them.

Don't spray in the wind, even a light breeze.

Once it starts getting "textured" there's almost no saving it, it's actually pretty sensitive to the surface you're spraying.

Spraying something like a grille means you're coming from different angles so you'll be hitting a lot of it with "over spray", consider masking sections.

It will start to dry before it even hits the surface on very hot days, drying time will vary dramatically depending on the weather.

The nozzle will start spitting out larger globs if it gets blocked and toward the end of the can, be careful.

Wait the full 10 minutes between coats.

Consider masking anyway depending on the edge, and cut with a very sharp razor - even a Stanley trimmer can "pull" or "tear" it.

Can't think of any more off the top of my head. Maybe I was being too much of a perfectionist or my expectations were too high but it was driving me nuts. Nobody really shows very close up pics of the finish so it's hard to tell what it really looks like.

Here you can see 2 different surfaces on the grille, I actually masked off the inner part and gave the outer part a really thick coat (you can see it's shinier and started to wrinkle) because it was all getting really rough like the inner part and looking like crap.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v291/hansvonaxion/Legacy/plastidipgrillesurface.jpg

And here on the headlights, the right side is where the old plastidip layer was peeled off and the left side had the old layer left on. Wouldn't give the same finish across both surfaces.

Hope that helps someone.

Well I put the Bilsteins back on because one of the coils was leaking. Don't notice as much of a difference going back but definitely a more civilised ride with more roll. May get larger aftermarket anti-roll bar(s) to compensate if one pops up cheap.

Also sold a third gen grille which had a gunmetal badge but the buyer wanted red so I swapped the second gen badge, for now I have a stock grille with gunmetal badge. Oh, maybe I should put it on the custom grille...

Cheers guys.

Cleaned the Bilsteins before putting them back on, halfway through realised I should probably have left the gunk on there to protect them.

Pedalled over to D1 in Odaiba, didn't pay to get in just took some pics in the car park.

Check out how tall the 86/BRZ looks next to supercars.
