Since this thread is super old, I'd like to add that engine management doesn't have to be taboo or complicated anymore. I am currently building my engine for my 99 Outback. I am using an EJ257 bottom end, EJ25D top end including intake manifold and harness. I am experimenting with a Speeduino standalone ECU kit. Since my car is MAF, that part of the engine harness gets removed and the ECU has a built in MAP sensor so I won't have to modify my intake manifold.
