I have no idea how accurate the i10 image is either, I haven't pulled apart the dash to check.

Thanks man!

I just found a camera I think I like a lot more:

http://cgi.ebay.com/Car-Rear-View-Reverse-Backup-Camera-Subaru-Legacy-/260686356800?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item3cb21e2140

It replaces the stock license plate light and just snaps into place. I think that might be the winner, for $30 shipped.

Any input?

Just got the license plate one. A no-drill option is, by far, the best option.

I might mount the other one I got under the bumper or something at the front of the car.

BAC, are you sure you can take the light out on the outback? I know on the later model Legacy, they switched to a non-screw option... where the light cover is a part of the rear panel - all one piece. The only way to get to the bulb is to remove the lining of the trunk.

I need to remove the hatch liner anyway, and I am sure that the lens will pop out. This camera isn't screw mount, it just latches into place. I bet it'll work, and if it doesn't I think it'll be a cleaner install than the other one anyway.

I just made my RCA -> Molex connector. Kind of a PITA because I got an ATX power connector, which is different than a P4 power connector. So I had to de-pin the ATX connector and pin a p4 connector. Then I had to solder everything. It worked out well!

The license plate lights on my Outback ARE screw in, and they look to be almost exactly the right size. I should be good to go with minor modification.

sedans do not have screw in bulb holders, this may be where the confusion lies.

Looks like the camera I got (the Legacy Specific one) is actually a direct bolt-in for a 5th Gen.

There is an Outback one that I'm going to see about getting.

Does anyone want the 5th gen one? $30 shipped.

Looks like I'll get the Outback one. They show a picture of a 4th gen Outback, and the dimensions of the bolts match up to the stock screw locations. I think I'll mount it on the RHS of the car, rather than the left.

I haven't yet decided how I want to wire the camera. I think I'll tap power to the camera off of the Reverse lights rather than have it on all of the time. That should be a pretty easy process. To tap the license plate light for power, I'm not sure how I want to do that. You can't remove the harness from the plug, so I guess I'll cut it free and solder the leads from the camera to the stock wires.

I think I'll mount my second camera, the one with the IRLED's built in, into the front of the car and run the RCA up to the video input on the screen. I don't really have any particular reason for doing that, but I don't want the camera to go to waste.

I think I'll mount the 5th gen camera in the passenger side mirror, pointing backwards. A double press of the info button gives me a parallel parking monitor.

  • 1 month later...

I knocked out the install today. From a desk full of parts, to fully installed, only took about 3 hours.

I have to still hook up a reverse camera, and update my KNA-G510, but so far I'm pretty happy!

I decided to mount the Kenwood unit behind the radio. I velcro'd it to the airbag control module. I used Posi-tap connectors for the CAN and VDC signals, but other than that everything was wired to a Tyco connector and an extension harness from SVXDC.

Pics to come!

Camera installed. What a PITA that was. Getting an RCA through the accordian boot in the hatch was tough. I tapped the reverse wire for camera power, and the license plate light for the... license plate light.

I ended up not drilling into the hatch, instead I just snuck the wires under the gasket for the reverse light. Should be fine.

Ran the wire to the front and hooked up the reverse input. Works like a charm, and you can hardly see the camera.

Thinking about doing this myself and yours looks great! Couple of questions:

1. What parts exactly would I need to get this done?

2. You said the install took less than three hours and wasn't that bad... would that be so for someone who's never done a stereo install and has only done basic wiring? (i've wired my boost gauge, hardwired a radar detector, etc. but never done anything this involved)

3. Where'd you get all of the parts you need, especially the OEM screen?

You could replicate my install if you sourced the entire pull-out nav from another car. I have the DVD module and the cable left over, if you want to buy it from me and utilize the factory navigation.

The install itself didn't take long, but modifying the harness did. It only required soldering about a dozen wires, but it was all done on the bench. Using very flexible wire GREATLY helped this install go easily.

I sourced my screen and everything from a 2008 Outback. The guy just wanted out of the system.

You can get them at the dealer for around $450 or something like that.
