Installation of factory navigation into non-nav car

BAC5.2

Recommended Posts

This space will be reserved for the installation of factory navigation into my non-nav equipped car. Save the Spec-B, there was never an 05-09 Legacy/Outback available with both a manual transmission and Navigation. I intend to fix that, and become one of the very few manual transmission, fully functional navigation vehicles on this board. If you haven't found out, I'm a stickler for high quality and good craftsmanship.

I'd love to hear from anyone who can answer some of the questions I'll undoubtedly have. I'll be posting questions in bold at the bottom of the first post in this thread. Pictures and walkthrough steps will be done after the first thread. The "journal" of installation will remain in the first post.

My motivation: I am disappointed in the CarPC integrations and mounting hack-jobs of portable GPS systems. I liked the clean look of the OEM screen and buttons, as well as the function of the screen as a novelty (calculator, maintenance reminder, time and date display, etc). Nothing looked OEM clean.

My approach: The OEM nav, apparently, sucks. It's DVD based, not user friendly, and generally terrible from all accounts I've heard. My swap will include the removal of the factory DVD drive (Kenwood DV3200 I think) and replace it with a Kenwood KNA-G510 unit. Since I don't care at all about having audio directions, that shortcoming isn't a factor. I've turned off the voice guidance on every GPS I've ever used.

Installation: I'm not going to cut any factory wires. I decided that after talking the install over with a few friends. It seems like such a waste to cut into factory wiring. Instead, I intend to make extension harnesses for everything I need. That will make the entire assembly a plug-and-play adventure. This, of course, makes for a lot of difficulty and added complexity. I could vampire-tap everything and call it good in a matter of an hour. But I won't do that. I'm going to do as OEM a job as possible.

What to expect: I'll try to do a full walk through, much like Drew888 did with his Morimoto H1 setup. I'll try to have pictures and pinout diagrams and the whole 9. I'm usually terrible at documenting installs, but I figure this is a pretty big one, so I'd like to "do it right". Plus, I'm sure it'll be useful for someone. I know a bunch of projects that would have taken me MUCH longer to do, were it not for walkthroughs on websites. I may never have gotten into modifying cars, were it not for a Snorkelectomy walkthrough I read more than a decade ago.

Stay Tuned for updates and pics!

3/1/2010 - I am in the process now of acquiring all of the connectors I will need to do my install. So far I have the connectors on the back of the screen, and now I need the i10 connector on the back of the combination meter, and the connectors for the radio harness. Once I have all of those, I should be in good shape to build my harness extenders.

I've decided to do this "right" and use really high quality wire. None of that crap you get at Pepboys. I'll be using Deans Ultra 16-gauge wire. It's ~$0.60 a foot, and is 660 strands. I'm not sure what gauge the factory wire is, but Deans doesn't make anything smaller than 16-gauge. I can get 20 gauge silicone sleeved wire for $0.56 a foot. I'll probably order 20 feet of red. If I build extensions for the combination meter and radio connectors that I need to tap into, I'll need that much or more. A 2" extension harness for the combination meter is going to require almost 4 feet of wire.

Anyone know the factory wire gauge?

That should be enough for now!

I saw someone do it before, but I lost the thread. And it wasn't a very complete writeup. If you find the thread, please post the link!

Tyco Electronics sucks trying to get information from. I need the i10 connectors (male and female) from the back of the combination meter and they won't point me in the right direction.

I THINK I have found them, but I can't confirm without ordering them and pulling apart the cluster to check.

I gave up trying to find the connectors and crimp terminals for the interior electronics. I wanted them to extend the clock harness and other wiring related to the carputer, but I couldn't find anything.

AMP/Tyco make some of the connectors and I think Sumitomo might too.

I have the Tyco connectors for the back of the screen, just not the i10 connector.

Would you mind sharing part numbers of the connectors you find? I assume you are also buying the bare crimp terminals and crimping your own ends too?

I'll update post 2 with the part numbers collected.

I haven't bought the bare crimp terminals, because I foolishly thought the connector would come with them. I was going to solder the connectors onto the wire ends. I don't really want to buy a crimping tool. Is that a bad idea?

Generally the connector housings don't come with the terminals or wires installed in them.

The nice thing about buying your own housings and terminals is so you don't have to solder/wrap wires, you can properly terminate the ends with no breaks.

A tool like this one http://www.jameco.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/Product_10001_10001_227491_-1

which is designed for some of the larger Molex crimp terminals might work on the Tyco terminals.

The other thing to consider is this:

There are "wire to wire" and "wire to board" connectors.

"Wire to wire" will offer both plug and receptacle housings and male and female crimp terminals.

"Wire to board" connectors will generally only offer female crimp terminals, since the male terminals are formed into the connectors and designed for direct soldering to the PCB.

This could make it difficult to make "breakout" harnesses, depending on what you need.

Is it bad practice to simply solder the wires to the terminals, though? I don't need a pig-tail harness. I'd like to have single continuous wires.

I plan on twisting the pair of CAN wires, and securing the twist with short lengths of heat shrink. Everything else will be run straight.

One possibility is to order terminal pin ends and receptacle ends, and a DIFFERENT 22 pin connector.

Then, de-pin the car side connector, plug them into my other 22-pin connector, and build my extension harness that way. It's not as clean, and much more time consuming, but it's an option.

Regarding the type of connector, the screen uses MultiLock connectors. It would surprise me if the rest of the car didn't, but then again it surprised me that the non-Nav cars were wired differently than the Nav cars.

I don't know. Im not really worried about the clock connector, just the combination meter connector.

I do need to order receptacles though. Looks like I'll put together a Newark order now.

So I can order 89 pins for $15.13 plus shipping from OnlineComponents.com, but none of the other connectors are in stock with a 10 week lead time.

What a pita. It might be easier to try and find someone who has wrecked their 4th gen and can cut that harness off the car and sell me the harness and the cluster.... which would cost far more than the $2 for the Tyco connectors.

Bac if you need any help I've done it in my car. 09 5sp GT. I do have a couple photos of how I ran my wires and cables.

You can buy the connector with attached wire for the dvd drive straight from kenwood. Has about 20 feet of wire on it.

I also do remember there was a thread on here with some one who else did it. Wonder if I have the link.

I'm not going to use the DVD drive, just a Kenwood KNA-G510.

Pictures would be awesome, especially of the wires you tapped for the screen installation!

Did you put the antenna in the factory location behind the combination meter? That's where I was planning on doing it.

I was going to mount the antenna behind the gauge cluster when I had it out to tap into the Canbus system since it was easier but I never did. I actually mounted it on the the dash bar behind the radio up in the left corner.

Here's some photos I have, I would love to open the dash back up and redo some of my wiring but I don't have the time for it right now, plus its still a little cold out. It looks a little neater then these photos, these where taken when i just got done putting it in.

1. Connectors for the screen, two power and info connectors, connector from dvd drive and RCA input for a dvd player

2. Some what of a mess of wires. Thats where I did most of my splices for power and audio. Besides the two splices for the canbus behind the cluster, and the one in each kick panel.

3. Another view

4. How I ran my wires from the dvd drive. This consits of all the power wires also wrapped up in its own cable (goes to mess behind the radio in picture 2), dvd drive to screen cable and RCA cable that cuts across under the center console and goes under the passenger seats carpet along with a hard wired aux input if I wanted to play dvd's audio through the factory speakers.

Do you need the wiring diagrams? I can post up all the diagrams from subaru that I used to wire every thing. I also have a few pictures of the back ends of the plugs if needed

I'd love a list of the wires you tapped if you have it!

I have all the diagrams, the whole FSM's actually.

How'd you tap the CAN wires behind the dash? Just vampire tap them? I'm trying my hardest to avoid that if possible.
