ehsnils
According to news in the Swedish Newspaper "Göteborgs-Posten" Subaru is going to start up a line in Sweden where Legacys and Outbacks are going to be converted to LPG. That in the SAAB factory in Trollhättan. As usual - I believe it when I see it! Article poured through Google's translate: http://translate.google.com/translate?js=n&prev=_t&hl=en&ie=UTF-8&layout=2&eotf=1&sl=sv&tl=en&u=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.gp.se%2Fekonomi%2F1.540900-subaru-gasar-pa-i-trollhattan
SubieDriver
Ooh, this would be a great preliminary step towards Subaru building SAABs again. I've been waiting to hear who Spyker will be obtaining chassis from for SAAB, once the GM agreements run out.
ehsnils
Another more extended article (autotranslated): http://translate.google.com/translate?js=n&prev=_t&hl=en&ie=UTF-8&layout=2&eotf=1&sl=sv&tl=en&u=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.dn.se%2Fmotor%2Fnyheter%2Fsubaru-gasar-pa-i-trolhattan And yet another article that's probably a bit easier to read than what the stupid auto-translation provides: http://www.thelocal.se/31746/20110131/ And I realized that it was CNG, not LPG... My mistake...

SubieDriver
It had an over-pressure release valve, so it shouldn't explode...

dr_sharp
It had an over-pressure release valve, so it shouldn't explode... A valve isn't going to stop it from 'crumpling' lol
ehsnils
I think that they actually mount the tank in a different way in later constructions, but that some other item has to donate space - at worst you lose some cargo space.
dr_sharp
Either way, they're not safe. IMO. lol
GEE-OTTO
Have you ever tried to induce a explosive failure from a Propane tank better yet a LP tank?? I've shot them with my 30-06 my Win 300 Short mag a 9mm even a 335 H&H mag we've ran over them with Cat C9's and they just fizzle. If you have you would know this thing is tough and IT DOESN'T EXPLODE like in the movies its take direct heat and a failure of the blow off for that to happen. High heat is nothing to these tanks and the heat caused to even actuate the blow off valve is hotter than you could stand to be 50 feet near of. LPG is SAFE this conversion is safe and Im glad they are trying different fuel avenues.

LPG is SAFE this conversion is safe and Im glad they are trying different fuel avenues. Please do not spread false information. You are incorrect on all accounts. I wish I could share some of our test results, but we have NDAs in place with all of our clients. I'll see if I can find any of our results for government organizations online. Long story short, we test these tanks according to SAE and FMVSS standards, among others. When the valves work, its not a big deal. But the valves can and do fail, this is why we run these tests in the middle of nowhere in West TX. When they do fail, it is quite an event. Your definition of "high heat" is probably not up to par with what federal regulations require in these test methods. They must be tested in the event of a fuel pool fire, which can reach temperatures in excess of 2000F. These tests are simply to ensure the valves function to release at whatever pressure they're designed to release. Now, consider a collision with another vehicle where the tank can rupture. "Oh no! They can't rupture I shot 'em with ma gun!" Do you know how much kinetic energy a bullet contains? Do you know how much energy a 3000 lb vehicle traveling at 60 mph contains? A better comparison than energy is momentum, where the difference is even bigger. My statement stands: Either way, they're not safe. IMO. lol
sirbOOm
I'd drive it just to not pay $3.50 a gallon.
