SlickSpur
How harmful is it to leave the car in gear to park? I'm having issues with my e-brake. It started recently as the temperatures have dropped in the North East. It's like it's stuck or frozen when I go to pull it up. I left it in gear to park in my driveway (a hill) the other day, but it's not something I'm in the habit of doing. It made me curious if this is a big no-no, or something that's not a big deal. GTTuner
It should ALWAYS be in gear when you park.
SlickSpur
But do you rely on the car being in gear to keep it stationary, then pull the e-brake for the back-up plan? Basically, would it be bad just to leave the car in gear and not use the e-brake?
dudeondacouch
Your users manual should specifically say to leave the car in the lowest gear when parked. This is in case the parking brake fails.
FPerron
The idea that leaving a manual transmission in gear when parked will hurt the transmission, is one of the most ancient car-related old wives tales.
wpmarky
What about parking downhill, leaving it in first w/o your e-brake won't be good for your front bumper.
HugoStiglitz
What about parking downhill, leaving it in first w/o your e-brake won't be good for your front bumper. That's why you turn your wheels to the curb.
JoeFromPA
The only way it's bad for your car is if you forget it's in gear, start the car, and let the clutch pedal out
