2010 HyperREV Super Lap Battle

There's a long list of annual events AVO participates in worldwide, with the HyperREV Tsukuba Super Lap Battle being the big punctuation mark on the end of the year. The Super Lap is the final big time attack for Japan, held at the infamous Tsukuba Circuit. AVO Japan (http://www.avosubaru.com, http://www.avojdm.com) has been fielding it's famous black STI widebody at the event for several years now, and have slowly but surely improving our times. The car has gone from 1m2sec times around the circuit to breaking the big 1 minute barrier with a 59 second lap last year. This year's event is on December 10th. Ross and the crew in Japan has been hard at work on the STI.

A new rear subframe has gone in with new coilovers front and rear. The front aerodynamics have been tweaked with a new splitter that sits about .00001 inches off the ground, good for sparks through the corners! Oh, and to keep any air from getting underneath the car at the 100+mph speeds the car reaches even on the 10 foot long straights at Tsukuba. With over 480+ WHP on tap, this car seriously moves.

We've also switched from the Yokohama ADVAN S tyres that we were previously running to Hankook's. They've had good press lately, and it doesn't hurt to try something new. Testing should give us some feedback before the race. The only issue we've got with them so far is that they are nearly 2kg heavier than the ADVAN's - each.

The competition is going to be tough - this isn't the Hypermeet with just fellow Subaru's and arch-rival Evo's to contend with. This is very much the run-what-you-brung battle, with every sort of hot vehicle of Japan coming for bragging rights. R32 through to new GT-R's, NSX's, Silvia's, and more. Far more. It's going to be one hot showdown!

They've got today to do testing, so crossing my fingers for them. It's a rough schedule, there's this event over Thursday/Friday, then Sat/Sun they have to head out to another event!

I think HyperREV is outfitting their car with video camera's again, so chances are we may show up in the (JDM) video of the event.

UPDATE: It's 3am in the morning for them, and they just got to bed. I wish I could say it's because they were partying till then... They've been rebuilding the transmission in time for the race. 4th gear blew out on them during the testing!

On the good news side - they did a 58.3 second lap during the testing, and there's definitely more (well, maybe you call it less?) available!

Morning (in Japan) updates. New transmission that's in has a 3.5 final ratio instead of the 3.5 we were running yesterday. The diff's in the transmission are not as strong as the old, so the driver is having issues coming out of corners (wheelspin). Still managed at official 58.9 second lap in the morning runs. Lots of day to go!

Well, last update before I dozed off was from after their second morning run. They were the fastest Subaru, and .5 seconds away from being the fastest 4wd. I think their fastest run at that point was a 58.2 second lap. I'll have to wait till this afternoon to find out the final data.

I'll have videos up from the event later, takes a while to transfer 3gb of files from Japan!

BTW, they ended up removing the 24mm Whiteline swaybar from the car for the AVO 22mm rear stabilizer bar. The 24mm was simply too large and was not allowing the rest of the suspension to work properly. Once we moved to the 22mm, we immediately picked up some time.

Nice time Paul. Good to see the Subaru represent so well. It's clear that the FDs really comported themselves well too. While not the fastest average speeds, they still posted some of the lowest overall lap times - testiment to how well these models can carry speed into and through the turns. Probably reel them in on the straights but give it up to them in the turns.

BTW - what gear oil are you running in your transmissions? Given the brutal nature of these run-what-you-brung events, any recommendations that would meet (and be available for) daily driver applications?

The car was featured on SpeedHunters!

Seeing cars like the AVO Turboworld Impreza pushed to the limit out on track is something that for me can't be rivaled, even by proper race events. The cars are all tuned beyond what their chassis were ever designed for and watching pro drivers like Taniguchi and Tarzan fling them around corners, struggling to keep them straight due to their explosive power delivery is very satisfying. Ross at AVO was satisfied for having gone much faster thanks to the new complex rear sub-frame he made up for his Open Class GDB Impreza. Compared to last year the bump steer the car was suffering from is gone and the whole set up has been revised, making it handle far better around Tsukuba's demanding layout. With the boost set to 2 bar, the bulletproof Cosworth EJ allowed for a 58.298 sec lap, making it the fastest Impreza on the day! That is over a second off the 59"343 it got last year.
