Forever! Its like any engine, depends on how well you take care of it. The 2.5s tend to have headgasket issues around 100k, but once those are fixed, and you have to worry about is maintaining it. I have seen a 2.5 in a forester hit 405k and still going.

2.2s are bulletproof :) Had to throw in my $0.02

 

The 2.5s only real concern is the HG going; if you run on cooked gaskets, you will warp the heads, and you should probably trash the motor at that point. But I've seen a 97 gt with the 2.5 and replaced gaskets hit 370k before it got totaled at an intersection. It was a sad day :(
