mclarenf3
So, looks like I didn't do enough research before buying this EDM dual console box. I've done some searching and don't see anyone who has installed a EDM dual console in a USDM car. Before I go modifying this piece to fit, I would like to know if anyone has done this before? Please note, I'm NOT talking about the EDM Console extension, which I know fits fine. This is the dual console box, which allows two storage bays, and a (fixed) extension of the console. Any and all help is greatly appreciated. I really want to get this thing to fit in my car. I neeeeeed the storage space. UPDATE: Well, I did it myself and I took lots of photos as I did it. Sorry, half way through the install my camera batteries died so I had to revert to my cell phone for some photos. I'm not going to write much (if anything) because I think the photos speak for themselves. In the end, I only had to modify three parts; the original armrest hinge, the original armrest lid plastic trim, and the dual console box. If I need to revert this back to stock, I just need to replace the armrest and hinge and it's back to normal without any signs of modification. This was my goal. I'm happy with the results. As stated above, my goal was to do as little modifications (or none) to the original parts and also keep the "stock" look if possible. I think it looks stock, other than to Subaru Legacy owners. The colour difference is because I had to pain the console box black, because the one I purchased was tan.
lofthouse_gt
Post some pics of this maybe I can help you out. I honestly don't even know what piece your talking about, but if there is a will there is a way.
mclarenf3
Ok, this is the box, and the last photo shows how it's supposed to look. However, the pieces just don't match. It's quite obvious that they are designed differently between the USDM and EDM versions. If you need photos of the parts matching up, I can get those also. lofthouse_gt
Yeah that would be helpful if you could get the pics of those pieces matching up. Maybe its just the pics, but that piece almost looks like its too small for the USDM console. I feel like if you can match it up decently you should be able to mount that hinge in the back. I can see why you would want that in your car though, pretty cool little piece.
exsterminator
I did exactly the same thing in ordering the EDM box. The hinges on the box are so different from the ones on ours that I could not see any way to make it work. If you do come up with a solution, please let me know as I am currently in posession of a $160 part that I can do nothing with!!!
mclarenf3
Alright, I'll get some more pictures up tonight and we'll wrap our heads together to get this sorted out. I think it's close, but obviously not a proper fit.
exsterminator
Alright, I'll get some more pictures up tonight and we'll wrap our heads together to get this sorted out. I think it's close, but obviously not a proper fit. I literally disassembled my storage box, piece by piece and messed around with different configurations to get this to work. I have the USDM lid, armrest extension and storage box, as well as the EDM dual console box. The hinge is the issue because our models have a large, curved, metal one whereas the EDM is small, flat and plastic. The holes for screws don't even line up properly. The curved hinge needs some sort of recess to operate properly, allowing the lid to open and close but the EDM box's dimensions preclude this from happening. I am not trying to piss on your parade and would like nothing better than to get the utility of this box. If you can find ANY WAY to make this work, please post it here. mclarenf3
Yep, I've disassembled mine a few times going over it today. I think it will work, but it might not match up perfectly. The top lid onto the dual console box will work nicely. The dual console box onto the console might not, though. I'll post more photos once I've done the modifications. Basically, I have to cut off the curved part that hides the hinge. Once that is off, I'll mount the dual console box hinge to the top lid. Then I'll mount the original hinge to the bottom of the dual console box, and hope for the best. In the end, the two modifications will be to the original hinge, and the original arm rest lid. If I mess it up too much, it shouldn't be too expensive to replace that one lid.
exsterminator
Please post as much detail on these exploits, as many photos and a step-by-step if possible. Really interested to see how you get on with this, like your lines of thinking
mclarenf3
Will do! I'll take photos as I do each step, and post the step-by-step if it is successful.
kjiz
I did this a few years back. Perfect fit. Did you get the correct year? The EDM/JDM changed their interior a little bit after 2007.
CatInTheDryer
What vendor did you buy this one from? I made the same mistake when I ordered my JDM console from Ross @ AVO. It cost $50 to ship it back and have the correct one sent but it was much better than eating the cost of the wrong part. The one you need is here: http://legacygt.com/forums/showthread.php/find-jdm-console-boxiii-138895.html?t=138895&highlight=jdm+armrest
Boostin1657615274
From the research I have performed, you need the console extension that curves at the back, and you bought the flat console extension. Look in this thread i started and it should answer all of your questions: http://legacygt.com/forums/showthread.php/find-jdm-console-boxiii-138895.html?t=138895 On the search for a new DD... mclarenf3
I bought mine off of a forum member thinking it was going to be a "small" modification. It might end up being a small modification, but I'm going to try it out and see before going and spending the same kind of money on the proper one again. I've got an extra arm rest lid on the way, so if I bugger mine up too much I can always revert to stock. I'll give this a shot today after work and see how it goes. But yes, the problem is I got the straight back one, and I needed the curved back one.
exsterminator
The part number referenced by boostin is the correct part number for the part you now have, for the EDM model. I ordered that exact part number and the picture is like the one in boostin's link but the actual part is now made differently. Seems Subie changed the part without changing the part number, somewhere along model year 2008 . . . .
mclarenf3
Oh really? So if I were to buy it from japanparts, I'd get the same one I have right now? Damn, there goes my backup plan. Now I really gotta make this work.
mclarenf3
I've updated the first post to show all the photos. I'm just going to post the finished results here as I ran out of attachments in that first post. Note: The colour difference is because I had to paint the dual console box, due to me ordering a tan one. :$
exsterminator
That is awesome work, you have done a brilliant mod job there. Seems a little beyond my abilities sadly so if anyone else would like to have a go at this, I will sell my brand new, unused EDM box (tan, not black) for a discount $120 shipped to lower 48 . . . mclarenf3
Thanks bud. It might look daunting, but it was only 3 cuts, and a few drilled holes.
exsterminator
Thanks bud. It might look daunting, but it was only 3 cuts, and a few drilled holes. In one of the last pix in the first post, showing the console from the rear, it appears as though the new box doesn't sit flush with the base and is slightly elevated perhaps due to the fabricated hinge. Is this the case? Also, can you please let me know which hinges you cut/drilled into?
mclarenf3
Yea, I was debating whether I should post that photo because it was an intermediate stage. I ended up cutting more from the box so it sits flush. Looks pretty crappy in the photo here. I only modified the original hinge by drilling two holes (to match up with the two holes at the bottom of the box) and cutting the ends off (so it could fit in the slot underneath the box). There are photos of both, just compare it to your parts and it should be clear what was done. I'll get some clear photos of the back when I get back from work today. Let me know if there are any more questions. I'm really happy to help you get this working.
exsterminator
Could you provide a little more detail as to what you did in steps 9-11? And when you say in your above post "I ended up cutting more from the box so it sits flush", I assume you mean from the EDM storage box? If so, what did you cut and how much??? I cannot tell you how great this thread is for me. I picked up a used lid for cheap and from the parts you listed that you modified, I should be able to simply put my extended armrest back on if I mess this up with no damage to anything other than my spare lid and the EDM box. ur a bus
I have one of these on my 2005 and it was a snap to install. Does your car have the USDM accessory armrest extension? If so, that was likely your problem. The JDM/EDM box is designed to work with the original fixed lid. Steve

I also acquired a lid but the problem is to do with the new hinges on the console boxes from Europe that is a completely different design. Wish I had a box made in 05!!! I don't remember where I got mine, probably Christmas 2006 or 2007? I also don't know what the later US consoles look like compared to mine. My post was mostly directed to the OP because he has an '06. -- Steve
