Legacy Swap Complete (Pics Inside)

Hey All,

I don’t spend much time on this forum, but since we’re all Legacy owners here I thought I would share some pics and information about my 2nd Generation Legacy drivetrain swap project.

The victim was my 1998 Legacy 2.5GT Limited with automatic transmission. I swapped over a donor 2005 WRX EJ20, 5MT manual transmission, LSD rear diff, and of course ECU and wiring harness. The project is pretty much done although I’m still working some minor bugs out. Overall, I’m entirely satisfied with the outcome and encourage all late model Legacy enthusiasts to do the same. The power is incredible! I’m running a number of performance upgrades including engine management, and am scheduled for a full tune the first week of May which should yield some interesting Dyno numbers so stay tuned...

Some random pics of the project:

Thanks for the comments :p

Stage-II, Not yet… I’m still waiting for some parts to come in before I can get my custom exhaust built. So in the meantime I’m running an old system from my original NA platform which is incredibly restrictive. That said, I’m only dialed in at the Stage-I map at 15psi until I can open the exhaust up. After that I can immediately bump up to Stage-II at target for 17psi.

TurboXS is performing my UTEC tune with both a dyno and road tuning, so I should have it really dialed in after that point.

As for the swap, yes Subaru’s are like LEGO’s and everything is pretty much interchangeable as long as you know the year compatibility. The wiring on the other hand, is not joke. It didn’t seem as bad as everybody makes it out to be but is a significant effort nonetheless…

it's a sweet car nevertheless.. not just the swap, but everything else on the car as well. Believe me, I met up with Xcntrk75 to sell him my UTEC and Perrin WRX intake.. it's one sick car.. oh yea, and it's lighter than our BL/BPs..

your lines from the upper tank and radiator are backwards

upper tank cap (use a standard .9 bar)-> bottle

lower cap (with plunger cut off) to upper tank

C’mon man you’re making me look bad. ;)

They’re hooked up just as you say. Maybe you need that Eagle eye looked at?

Seriously though, it’s kind of hard to tell in the picture but the engine reservoir-cap (front feed in picture) is feeding the bottle, and the radiator neck is feeding the engine reservoir (rearward feed in picture). Are you saying this is not correct?

Here’s another much larger pic for those with bad eyes:

Very nice, kudos on the project. :)

What else have you done in the area of handling and performance to spruce it up and balance it out? I really like a balanced car that can handle it's own in many realms.

^^^^^^

Nothing yet, and it’s in desperate need…

I bought this car new off the show room floor, and drove the hell out of it over the past 7 years. At about 114k miles I began having severe transmission problems and minor engine issues (headgaskets). I’m obviously still found of the car, so for a little more than the cost to repair my old tired drivetrain, I was able to perform a swap instead.

As for handling, this is up next on my agenda. I have a set of White-line “control” springs but I’m thinking about upgrading to the ION sport ones instead. As for struts, most likely KYB GR2. Also I’m looking into some powerslot replacement rotors and a nice set of quality pads. This will all be occurring in the next couple of months.

If anybody has suggestions to this suspension/brake setup or other advice on alternative components, I would love to hear it. I’m looking for quality but don’t want to spend an excessive amount in this department.

Thanks…

Yeah the Chilton’s didn’t do much good, other than what you see it being used for…

As for the “p33k-a-b00” factor, it’s even much better now cuz I just slapped on an STI TMIC…woot… You can faintly see the letters through the tiny Legacy scoop…
