"Ward's Announces Auto Interior of the Year Awards For 2010

SOUTHFIELD, Mich., April 12 /PRNewswire/ -- Ward's Auto Interior of the Year Awards, North America's only honors for excellence in automotive interiors, have been announced for 2010. The list features winners in pricing and vehicle type categories, as well as special award winners for design, versatility and brand expression.

The 2010 Ward's Auto Interior of the Year winners are:

Subaru Outback (Popular-priced car under $29,999)

Infiniti M56 (Premium-priced car)

Lexus HS 250h (Hybrid car)

Chevrolet Camaro (Sports car)

Chevrolet Equinox (Popular-priced truck under $39,999)

Volvo XC60 (Premium-priced truck)

Acura ZDX (Design Breakthrough)

Mazdaspeed3 (Brand Expression)

BMW 5-Series Gran Turismo (Design Versatility)

Porsche Panamera (Inspired Design)

"For years, the focus on safety and functionality has given us drab, uninspired vehicle interiors," said Ward's AutoWorld Editor-in-Chief Drew Winter. "This year's winners show style and original design is becoming as important inside the vehicle as it already is to the sheet metal outside."

A team of eight Ward's editors evaluated 40 vehicles that have either all-new or significantly upgraded interiors this year. The vehicles – both car and truck – were divided into segments, with one winner named in each category. In addition, Ward's bestowed special awards for outstanding achievements in key areas. Having both designations allowed judges to rank vehicles against the entire field, regardless of segment and price. Judging criteria included aesthetics and design harmony, comfort, driver information, ergonomics, fit and finish, materials, safety and overall value.

The awards will be presented during a ceremony held as part of the Ward's Auto Interiors Conference on May 19 at the Ritz Carlton Hotel in Dearborn, MI. Registration details can be found online at www.autointeriors.com."

Acura ZDX and Chevy Camaro are on that list, too.

Makes me question the judgment of the reviewers.

Plus it is bunk to only consider "new" interiors. What if the new interiors suck compared to other interiors that aren't new this model year? new crap wins by default just by being new?

That is like saying someone can't win MVP twice, even if they earn it after their "rookie" year.

I know how car of the year works. It SUCKS.

Car of the year, interior of the year, whatever-of-the-year should be open to ANY car offered for that current year, not just what is NEW for that year.

THEN, if they want to have a category of awards for best "NEW" whatever-it-is for this year, they can have that as a sub-award with the contestants narrowed to only new entrants.

The "new" clause only handicaps true competition for the award.

What happens if the runner up last year is better than ALL the new stuff this year? The better qualified contestant is disqualified simply by not being brand new? That is bullcrap.

If the car is sold for the model year in question, it should be considered as a competitor.

Do you think they only give Emmys or Oscars or Grammys to NEW artists for artist-of-the-year? NO. They give it to the BEST for that year, regardless of whether they won the year before or not, ideally. Then they have another category for best-new-whatever... that is a separate award.

Everything depends on the criteria. If points are given for lazyboy seats for fat asses without bolstering, hard plastic dash, gaudy gauges and mall kiosk like center stack with terrible ergonomics (e.g. buttons for temperature adjustment) - sure the 2010 barges are winners there.

It's been a couple days since I've picked apart how wrong you are so I think I'll do it again-

Yeah, because the 05-09s had massive seat bolstering... not.

2010 (and yes, I realize it's not a US model but the seats look to be the same):

gaudy gauges

Yeah because the GIANT hubs on the 05-09 gauges were the end-all of good style:

Still looks clean to me, the blue center is an odd touch, but it's hardly over the top compared to the dozens and dozens of cars I drive in a given year.

mall kiosk like center stack with terrible ergonomics (e.g. buttons for temperature adjustment) - sure the 2010 barges are winners there.

Buttons vs. knobs for temp adjustment equates to horrible ergonomics? You are a fanboy, jeez. First off I hate electronic climate control to begin with but regardless in all the cars I've driven over the years I've never felt one was better than the other.

And I'm sorry but the only way I can describe this look is dated:

I fail to see what is so awful here, the 2 temp buttons probably take up less space than a knob would and honestly I don't understand how the center stack looks like a mall kiosk so I'll leave that one alone.

Just go back you to your perfectly ergonomic turbo lag wagon.
