What do you guys think of this Spec.B?

Recommended Posts

I was looking at that too...

I think they stated that they would repair the damage before selling it. So use that to drop the price another $1k or so. Since its not a Subaru dealer or other reputable dealer, I would have an good independent Subaru mechanic check it out. You could potentially have a good deal there

Looks ok, but...

Considering where the damage is, there could be more than just cosmetic damage, wheel could be damaged, or worse the steering and or wheel bearings, etc....

Also it is out of factory warranty, they state bumper to bumper, but that could only be for 30 days, I would want an extended warranty on it, and have the dealer put in writing that they would fix any mechanical related issues to the damage.

IMO!

Problem is I'm from right around Philly so it's a hike for me to get up there. I wouldn't know where to take it. I might have to pass unfortunately. I'd be nervous buying from a non-Subaru dealer, they say they offer a warranty, but I'm like 2 hours away so I'm not sure how useful that'd be.

I had the same concerns about suspension damage, etc. He said it's covered to 50,000 miles and I could buy an extended warranty. I'll have to find out what that would cost and what company it would be from.

The other one I'm looking at is this one. Going to look at it tonight I think. Older but lower miles. Not a Subaru dealership again though. This one I might be able to take to my mechanic because it's only about a half hour away. The thing that's weird about this one is that the badge says GT but everything else says Spec.B to me. Were they not badged in 06? It has the number placard behind the shifter.

Well the Subie powertrain would be covered for 6yr/50K but the bumper to bumper at least for my 09, was only 3 yr/ 36k miles. So unless there is something more than a factory warranty on the car, then he is mistaken. I would ask him to send you the warranty via email, so you could review it.

That's a Spec. B. You can tell from the red interior. It doesn't have the 6MT that the 07+ have though.

It's a 2006 Spec.B. Unfortunately it doesn't get the 6MT with the Torsen differential. Those came on 2007-2009 Spec.Bs. It also has the full leather interior instead of the leather/Alcantara that came on the 2007-2009.

I would not consider it myself. There are too many unknowns, I think you'd be better off waiting for another one. A few years down the road I think you'll be happy that you did wait for one with a clean record to come along.

The description says that the body shop repair would be $600, but there's no way it would be that cheap. Assuming the damage is only cosmetic you're still looking at $1500+ to fix the bumper and fender.

How do you figure that? Assuming you were to replace both with brand new parts, it wouldn't even be that much. How much does a fender cost? Let's say $300 and let's make the bumper $500. That's only $800 right there, do you really think pain/install is another $700?

Professional body work costs more than what you are accounting for in your numbers to get to $800. Think of a cheap hooker compared to a hot escort (if they exist outside of the movies). <---you get what you pay for.

The major red flag that comes to my mind is that if they are going to fix it anyways, why the heck not do it before trying to sell it? What dealer in their right mind would not just fork out the money to get it repaired before showing it to their customers. Obviously not a dealer you want to deal with.

My $.02

I would run a car fax on the silver 06 spec.b. Then I would go test drive it...Leave..come back and test drive again..then work the dealer on the best price. Its a nice looking car and the low miles is a definite plus!

You're right. I should know this considering the repair work I had done on my previous car. I just didn't think 1,500 for that, but I guess anything is possible.

There is a lot of work in replacing the bumper and fender. If you go with aftermarket parts(cheap hooker)....then your looking at maybe around $600-$750 for parts?

If your going genuine Subaru parts (hot escort) your looking at a lot more. Then you have painting it. You could go to Maaco (cheap hooker) or have a good body shop who will match the color as best as possible (again hot escort).

Finally there is installing the parts. You can do it fast (cheap hooker style) but that will often lead to improper gaps and things rattling.

You can go cheap in body repair but it leads to : After market parts, improper gaps and fitments, rattling, bad paint and NO WARRANTY from the body shop on the repairs.

Maybe my numbers are skewed as I'm in CA, and everything costs more. But usually it will cost about $800 just to strip and repaint a bumper here, and that one would need top be replaced. Add in the replacement of the fender and paint, I'm guessing around $1500 (in CA atleast). And keep in mind a good shop will usually blend the paint to the rest of the car, so a little paint for the hood, door, and opposite fender may be needed.

I thought it was a Spec. B but was confused because the badge on the trunk says 2.5 GT.

Re-badged!!

It hasn't been rebadged. Don't worry about that.

The 06 SpecB had simply a GT badge without the SpecB one.

I'd say your estimate is about right.
