WOT causing LASER warning?

Well it could be due to a defective case seal or it could be due to the way it's handled...ie if a person takes it out of the car frequently (so as to keep it concealed) or if there's switching out for car to car....or depending upon what car and where they mount it on the windshield it could see more vibration which could cause the seal to wear over time.

I know there are times when I park in public places that I will take my 9500 off the windshield and place in the glove box (and lock it of course) and then sometimes when I get back in the car, I forget to get the detector out and just drive to my destination....well while in the glove box, it's moving/bouncing around which could damage the seal.

^ Good thought as well. :)

Certainly, these little devices do not see an easy life!

Wanted to update this thread with some info I got from Escort today. They are advertising a $59 radar detector tune-up that they said will cover the cost of the false-laser repair along with cleaning, software update, and calibrating and optimizing sensitivity. The bad news is the 2-week turn-around time, but I'm going to send mine in and give it a try.

Wanted to update this thread with some info I got from Escort today. The tune-up, if you've followed this thread, will also include additional shielding around the laser circuitry, which will further decrease laser sensitivity by about 30%.

So, that could be argued both ways:

- Pro: That since LASER detection is so poor on Escort/BEL units, anyway, what's the additional loss of 1/3 of what poor performance there is to begin with?

- Con: That since LASER detection is so poor on Escort/BEL units to begin with, any further loss in sensitivity is unacceptable.

Up to you to decide.

Typically, I advise the return to Escort as an absolute last resort.

I am sending mine back anyway for the tune-up because once every couple weeks my 8500 X50 flashes "Service Required" so I want to get that taken care of. I will call them tomorrow to see if they add shielding or if they are using another technique to clear up the issue. I'll post whatever I find out. Thanks dr_sharp and TSi+WRX.

^ Don't trust them to give you the skinny on what they'll do - I'd try their on-line Forums.

I've found their phone-based technical and customer-support to be *highly* variable over the years.

Online, they know they're held accountable by the many hobbyists and enthusiasts - so you're more likely to get the truth. :)

If your unit is flashing "Service Required," then yes, by all means, send it in. Who knows, the laser falsing may be more indicative of a larger failure!

Best of luck!

I get the Service required message on occasion as well. After a good cleaning it stops. And if I'm getting both the service required and the wot laser then i clean the pcb and all is well. Do what you want, but i'm 95% sure that my suggestion will fix your problem.

^ Interesting....what's going on that's causing your board to get so dirty?

I think the caps leak electrolyte. There is always a small amount of red residue around them. Its not visible to the naked eye when on the board, but you can see it on the cloth after wiping the board down with alcohol.

^ Ah, that would definitely do it.

Yep, I was a 1G DSMer, a long time ago. :) Plenty familiar with the havoc that could cause!!!!

^ Unless you're noticing something *consistent* about the V1's report, don't worry about it.

The V1's LASER sensors are among the most sensitive out there. As-such, you lose a bit of discrimination/"false-rejection." There's numerous natural phenomenon (a bright glint of sunlight, for example) as well as man-made events that can cause a LASER detector/jammer to respond, and without very sophisticated "anti-falsing" algorithms (such as is seen on the Laser Interceptor) or drastically reduced sensitivity (as seen on the Escort/BEL units), such "falsing" is rather unavoidable.
