Theride
I am looking around for a car and the only 5 speed i see in and around the 5 boroughs is a gold looking one at Bill Kolb. I also see one at Van Bortel subaru. Are these that rare on the non turbo cars? I test drove the auto but it didn't inspire me at all. Maybe because I drive a 5 speed now. Bdubs
They aren't rare, just difficult to locate. I have to agree with you, that 99% of the "i's" on dealer lots are auto. When the dealerships pick trims and options on their cars, they go by what is obviously going to sell, and isn't going to just consume space on the lot. So, maybe they'll get a 5spd, but the other 12 vehicles will be an automatic. It all boils down to "nobody wants a 5spd transmission".

Scruit
Then you buy from Germany or somewhere in Europe. 90% of cars sold there are manuals.
king_j
when i was searching, i would have needed to travel more than 250 miles for a manual. I eventually found one at an auction. some locations have plenty, others have none.
timmahh
I couldn't find a 5MT GT for the life of me.. finally a non-limited ended up at a local dealer and my dealer got it for me
leglover
05 5-speed turbo wagons are rare, but thats about it. These cars are sweet, most people don't wanna give them up unless they have to. Do some autotrader.com and cars.com searching, if your willing to travel to get a new car your options will increase alot.
ktmrider
Like mentioned not exactly rare ( short of the 05 wagon ) but definitely harder to find. Got lucky on mine ( non-LTD stick ) since this region tends to have auto boxes.
Theride
There is one at Van Bortel that i like but damn. its like 6 hours away. and i wouldnt even know where to begin where bargaining is concerned. I like to see the car im buying in person. Based on the loan I have I rather buy in New York.(wish i didnt have to) Also the car im lookin at at van bortel is way over priced and im not sure if its worth the hassle. Maybe other dealers in the area has a 08/09 manual but they havent put it up on autotrader.
hakgwai
i got a good price for my car, and i talked to the dealer on the phone and through email. once you got a price you want, drive over, check the car and pay
Mickeytl
The manual and auto Legacy sells for similar price, so I wouldn't expect them to be rare. People are just not selling their manual Legacy right now.

GTTuner
I am pretty sure an 05 LGT Limited sedan in Garnet red and taupe leather is pretty rare in a 5 speed. Somewhere in this forum there are production numbers.
leglover
what if when you drive over you realized that it was in an accident or something is wrong? Don't buy it. After a price agreement is reached on the phone, the salesperson may want a deposit, if its non-refundable only give them $40 or so to hold the car for a few, i've done it before. If the deposit is refundable, feel free to give them more. But make sure to ask. ***Also, inquiring about a clean title/carfax report should be one of the first questions you ask over the phone***
Craig S
I've been searching the last month or so, and finally found one on Sunday to buy. Around the Seattle area, they are probably 1/5 of the cars for sale. They seem to command a slightly higher price too, maybe 5-10% more than an automatic. The problem is that you can find almost any color combo you like in an auto, but finding the right color in a manual is going to take longer. I ended up going with a silver/black which I like, but wasn't my first choice. It wasn't my last either, so I think I did OK. This is fairly common among BMWs too (my "other" car)- finding a manual in cars can be difficult (even among M cars now too).
