Inigo Montoya
I popped under my car this evening to install my skidplate, and found this: http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3328/3336237607_2be99397df.jpg?v=0 http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3368/3336236763_6e8eb82192.jpg?v=0 Now the question is, can I even try fixing this myself? I am pretty good, have a decent amount of tools and have changed a clutch and did the timing belt on a miata, did my uppipe and downpipe on the legacy, but never did transmission stuff...... Edit, I should learn how to spell: axle
Inigo Montoya
been reading, evidently also known as a cv boot, common problem since this is where the downpipe is. Now looking for directions to fix.

Actually the DP has nothing to do with it. All FWD and AWD cars will experience this regardless because it sits right under the engine and heat. Mix that with road conditions over time and the boot will dry out, crack and then tear/split. If you changed a clutch, then you should be able to an axle boot. Inigo Montoya
True, but from what I have seen here (and over on NASIOC) the passenger side one is the one that always seems to split first. It is only a couple of inches away from the boot, so I can see where it contributes.

I see more right inners go more than left inners and rarely see the outers go, but have seen a small handfull, but the DP isn't the reason they go, which is why I added my facts. Inigo Montoya
Understood, I have been looking at the other posts that you have commented on, just seems like it would be a contributing factor, not the only one, but part.

massdrewski
I replaced my little brothers on his 94leggy passenger side. Not hard to do. It took me a little over 2 hours to fix. Pretty easy. I paid $135 and got $61 for the core. On a scale of 1-10 I would say that it was a 3.
elpete77
just changed my oil,,, and i found the exact same thing; is 60k a little early for a cv boot to tear?
mwiener2
proximity to downpipe is a MAJOR factor as to the CV boots failing on subarus. Most people replace the right side one 1-2 times before the left goes...if it ever goes My Mods List (Updated 8/22/17) 2005 Outback FMT Running on Electrons
__raj
just changed my oil,,, and i found the exact same thing; is 60k a little early for a cv boot to tear? My 04 WRX with 60k just had one replaced(near downpipe) at dealer. They charged $180 to replace the boot itself. Not any idea of price being high or low but I only paid $10 out of pocket + 2 Subaru Coupons for CV Boot + oil change.
itsme
I was going tho fix the boot. Then I found a place that had a brand new axle for $75 or $80 just changed the whole axle. You could even get your stock one rebuilt. Then atleast you don'thave to worry about that axle for a while. odenheimer
My right "inner" (I think) went out around 39,000. That is way too early for a garaged car in Southern California. IT cost $180 at the dealer. S.O.A is getting a copy of the bill.
