no, the hans devise was used by f1 drivers for a while....nascar made it mandatory after dale sr. died

I'm not sure if it was that in particular; but the controversy was that there was a relatively new device that would better protect the driver in a crash; but Dale was of the old school philosophy, so he wasnt using it and it was argued if that would have saved his life (IIRC).

 

And I hate Nascar (Look, another left turn!!!). I've just read a lot of ESPN over the years.

From what I recall the HANS device was fairly new still and Dale Sr. was strongly against it saying it would prevent you from exiting the car quickly. IIRC it was a basal skull fracture that did him in; exactly the injury the HANS device was designed to prevent.
