TimGinCentralNJ
I've been noticing that shifting into 3rd is occurring less smoothly than when my car was new. Not grinding or anything, but not engaging smoothly. Do the OEM short-shift kits wear out...and if so...how does one know when that's happened? Car only has 65k on it and I'm not a racer Thanks, Tim
Opie
The shifter doesn't wear out, but the bushings might.
CwhillVT
I too have the oem short shifter w/ about 62k miles. Mine was always kinda notchy (as most would agree) but lately I have noticed my bushings might be wearing. Third gear sometimes has some resistance and non-smooth engagement. stingray1967
I just replaced the bushings in my 05 5MT with 56K miles. (see link below) The shifter is much more precise now, but still has some play. It is MUCH better than the stock shifter (non-STi short throw factory option) and stock bushings. I did not replace the transmission bushings, and am told that these will increase the amount of noise transmitted into the cabin. They'll improve the rigidity of the system, but more noise is the trade off. http://www.turninconcepts.com/index.php?cPath=1_14_364_376_1205
