TPLGT Posted July 13, 2008 Posted July 13, 2008 So I am about to pull the trigger on a new set of tires and am wondering if any of you has had experience with the Road Hazard service sold by Tire Rack? The cost is $9.24 per tire and they cover 100% for the first 12 months then $25 per 'incident' for 36 months. It is strictly a reimbursement deal. If I was to buy tires at a Tire shop, I may buy RH for the conveniece. I don't see much convenience if I have to get reimbursed. Anyone deal with this through Tire Rack...just curious how it went? Rehab is for quitters.
fatbastard Posted July 14, 2008 Posted July 14, 2008 I woulnd't bother....most plans will not cover replacement of all tires if one blows. None of the plans at my local retailers would and I would imagine since the price is the same for coverage ragardless of vehicle TR will be the same.
TobyR Posted July 14, 2008 Posted July 14, 2008 I think the plan only covers $25 per tire per incident. Probably not worth it. Anything that can be fixed on a tire is usually less than $50. And how likely is a 4 tire road hazard incident anyway? I'd pass.
starhm Posted July 14, 2008 Posted July 14, 2008 no...awd gets interesting with peeps...they wont replace just one tire out of a set. you will still have to buy three out of pocket if something goes wrong...saw this with a guy i work with that has an s60 awd. i would specifically ask tire rack how this applies to awd cars first.
TPLGT Posted July 14, 2008 Author Posted July 14, 2008 My expereicen with road hazard has been that they replace only the tire that has the issue so if it is say 8 mos. down the road when something happened, I would have 3 tires w/ 8 mos. worth of wear and 1 NEW. I would most likely not replace all 4 tires myself in that sitatuion as it becomes costly...I DK.... Rehab is for quitters.
jonklein611 Posted July 14, 2008 Posted July 14, 2008 I'd say skip it, I get mine through tire rack. Had a blowout in the 1st few weeks, called up tire rack, not they can't replace it for free, but they sent a new one out free shipping and @ 1/2 price.

They'll want you to measure the tread depth or circumfrance of the remaining tires so they can shave the replacement tire down to the appropriate size.
starhm Posted July 14, 2008 Posted July 14, 2008 you have to replace all 4. there is a small deviation on wheel diameter between all the tires on your car to prevent damage to the awd drive train. last i searched it was .25", but dont quote me. most tire places wont even play that with you. research it and get it in writing or dont pay for it.
TPLGT Posted July 14, 2008 Author Posted July 14, 2008 They'll want you to measure the tread depth or circumfrance of the remaining tires so they can shave the replacement tire down to the appropriate size. You're not serious? Rehab is for quitters.
LuckyBob Posted July 14, 2008 Posted July 14, 2008 You're not serious? Yes, he is. Different tire sizes (I recall hearing more than ~0.25" circumfrence difference) will cause the wheels to rotate at different speeds, which will slowly damage the diffs in the car.
starhm Posted July 14, 2008 Posted July 14, 2008 i dont know of any place that shaves tires...where is this done?

BY different sizes do you mean wear on the tire of literally sizes? Rehab is for quitters.
fatbastard Posted July 14, 2008 Posted July 14, 2008 TR will shave tires...by different sizes they are referring to wear. Eve if you replace teh tire with another 215/45/17 the rolling diameters will be different and I think teh manual says they need to be within a 1/4".
starhm Posted July 15, 2008 Posted July 15, 2008 BY different sizes do you mean wear on the tire of literally sizes? circumference change due to wear on tires of the same size. yep, tread wear. you can use the new diameter to get the circumference... what is TR? (tire shaving location)
KartRacerBoy Posted July 15, 2008 Posted July 15, 2008 Tire Rack. I doubt if many (or any) retail tire shops offer shaving.
TPLGT Posted July 15, 2008 Author Posted July 15, 2008 Wow! I learn something new everyday! What would happen if any of us bot a new set of tires and 9 months later we get a blow out? Would we then need to buy a new tire (same Manufacture, size,etc..) then have to give TR the 'new circumference so they can shave the brand new tire down to the size of the 3 other used ones? That would be weird. Rehab is for quitters.

TPLGT Posted July 15, 2008 Author Posted July 15, 2008 What about if its been say 2 years? Rehab is for quitters.
krzyss Posted July 16, 2008 Posted July 16, 2008 You either buy 4 tires or shave or mount new one on front axle with open differential and take your chances. Your choice. Krzys
ilh Posted July 16, 2008 Posted July 16, 2008 I believe the manual states you need circumference within 1/4-inch, which comes to about 1.3 32nds in tread depth, not a big difference in terms of wear. Luke at the TireRack on NASIOC says 3-4 32nds may be OK on Subarus. Anyone know what TireRack charges for shaving? --Lee
starhm Posted July 16, 2008 Posted July 16, 2008 hmmmm, if tirerack shaves tires then i would make sure of that and find out if the road hazard would cover shaving to match up tires on an awd. it would still leave you giving them the dimension of existing tires. still sounds like a pain. where would you get the existing tires measured to give them shave dimensions?
ilh Posted July 16, 2008 Posted July 16, 2008 Buy a tire depth gauge for $10ish, or measure with a digital/dial caliper if you have one.
wukindada Posted July 16, 2008 Posted July 16, 2008 To answer the question.......NO Spend the extra jack on a better tire;) Toyota 6EATS .........SUCK!!!!!!
