The pipe will be black and so will the bumper...but what do you guys think of how the driver side would look if the pipe had to protrude a bit?

Todays update: last night the primer was sanded to a smooth smooth finish. and dried over night and today the first two layers of OBP were layed on it. should be all pretty and completed by saturday...that is if my t-bolt clamps show up.

grrrr cant adjust the piping till those damn t-olt clamps show up

(btw the mesh will be slightly cut to allow the easy passage of the piping to the intercooler, just the like image above looks on the driver side)

yay - can't wait! but also, due to reflected sunlight on my 0 contrast and brightness monitor, it did make it hard to see the pics too. it's nightfall now and it's much better. i'm guessing the fitment is perfect now?

get rid of the AEM frame(and plate if you dont have to have it). other than that looks really good. i know you preped and painted it yourself. did you do it with paint gun or some other way

thank you for the warm and kind words from everybody.

the AEM frame will go soon, since the intake i have is an AVO lol. i had an AEM intake at one point. I want to get a nice high gloss black frame for the front and the back. I might be in the market for either one of those JDM angeled license plate holders(on those hinges), or one of those hideaway frames for below the bumber or somewhere else i could frabricate it to hide.

In addition id love to get a nice high gloss frame for the back especially since on the back i have a specially mounted rearview camera with a crucial frame that has been altered, and now it just says C[backup-CAM]AL. (th -RUCI- part was cut out becuase the camera goes there instead.(ill post pics if you guys want lol. or link it up here.

Onto the subject of painting. It was my first first first time doing any kind of painting that didnt involve some piece of body that would never be seen.

(My example of a piece that could be painted amateur-ishly yet never really seen or analyzed for perfection, this was my first job at "body work"-> http://legacygt.com/forums/showthread.php?t=83903 )

So anyway, when the bumper was sitting in my house it came with a box tat had the fog lights, as well as wiring for the fog lights, as well as this small 1.5inch by 9inch piece of plastic that seemed to be some JDM specific part that attached right at the bottom of the bumper in front of the front wheels. basically right next to the where our windshield washer bottles/tanks are. That piece was painted exactly in the same way as the bumper was originally painted. So i used that as my example/test subject to see how well i could get the bumper to look if i did end up going at it all myself. here is the steps i took for that lil support-piece, which ended up transfering over to what i did to the bumper.

(yes i know im explaining this in far more detail then is required, and definitly going above and beyond your simple question of spray gun or spray can or other...but hopefully everyone understands since everybody could use this thread for help, then its important to list as much detail as possible.)

1. i first used soap and water and then after that i used half a bottle of rubbing alchol, and a dish cloth that was old. I wiped down every single piece of exposed surface on this bumper. I took every single mesh piece of, the fog housings off, the subaru emblems...everything, and either rubbed them clean or dunked them clean to ensure that i wasnt missing any part of the bumper, btw the mesh is held on by these wierd piece of metal that have these teeth that bite into these little extensions of the bumper.

2. After the cleaning, i ensured to find out where any imperfections or holes, or gaps were, becuase then id have to figure out how to take care of them so they wouldnt show. After finding these imperfections i sanded down everything on the bumper (not the extra pieces i removed) using 200Grit sand paper bricks from home depot, and dry sanded at first, i managed to get the gashes down to a flat surface at this point, i used 400 gritthen to smooth everything out more, to give it a very nice smooth finish.

(the next few steps i figured out on my own, through guess-and-check work on that lil spare piece, but this is what i eventually ended up doing, i hope it was good enough.)

3. i sprayed the entire bumper with Rustoleum Adhesion Promoter, it came out clear, and dried instantly so i probably used like two to three thin layers all acorss bumper as well as the spare pieces.

4. i sprayed everything including the spare pieces with Rustoleum Plastic Primer, since the bumper isnt really anything but a hard plastic shell, and not metal like older cars. I sprayed somewhere around 2-4 layers around the entire bumper, and most importantly have a really good object you can use to keep the bumper on so that you can get every single side and edge. I used a mini wheel chair that was covered with large leaf bags which allowed for me to spin the bumper, and have a full view of every surface. The plastic primer seemed to be slightly slower on the drying time but it seemed to have more "flex" to it then the metal paints that i used on the test runs.

5. after the plastic primer was on, and seemed to cover everything evenly on the bumper i sanded one more time with 400grit sand paper bricks, and a bottle of warm soapy water. This was my first time wet sanding, in some places i put too much pressure and got some blue to protrude out through the black-plastic-primer. So i reprayed a few spots with more primer, and then re-wetsanded but lighter in those spots, and only after it had dried properly for like 24 hours.

**Suggestion=in temperatures below 50 degrees F, it sometimes is very diffcult to get even and non-bubbly/non-webbed paint surfaces, so i read online that you should do your best to keep your "DIY paint room" as warm as possible. I had two portable heatersthat were placed on both sides of the bumper and angled up at a 45 degree angle to get from the leftest/rightest most side to somewhere in front of the fog light holes. i also plugged in a heat lamp right above to heat the frontest most part of the bumper. but in addition try to keep your paint bottles in warm-hotter water for at least 30minutes before you use them**

6. after the primer was dry, and smooth, and seemed to lack any bubbeling or webbing due to cold temperatures i gave it one more fine wet sanding with 1200 grit sand paper, washed it all clean and dried it. You have to make sure over and over and over that every single surface is smooth as glass and no imperfections are present.

7. This was my own interpretation/best assumption of what would be the smart thing to do when painting. Didnt turn out that bad, you guys please give me your opinion of this step. I used Rustoleum Semi-Gloss Black Auto Paint, and sprayed the bumper everywhere with like 2 layers of paint, made sure everything baked on evenly, dried properly, and i didnt have any webbing or pimples or drips any where. The reason i did this, as well as why i used black primers, was just in case i get a chip from a rock, it would still show black, and would only need to be filled in when i see that chip. After it tried i looked over to see for imperfections, saw maybe 2 at the most, wet sanded with 1200 grit sand paper again, and reprayed with the Auto-paint.

8. THE DREADFUL ERROR STEP: MAKE SURE YOU TEST THE COLOR/QUALITY OF YOUR PAINT ON SOMETHING ELSE BEFORE YOU SPRAY WHAT YOU ARE WORKING ON.

I used paintscratch to get some OBP paint, and the paint came in a rattle can, and i thought that everything would go as smoothly as all the other steps, but i was way way way off. I warmed the bottle, and warmed the bumper, and began to spray it, and it was coming out with all the lil green and blue flakes like the OBP, and i thought i was almost done painting this bumper, i was so freaking wrong its upsetting. This is what ended up happening, after i gave the entire bumper 1 light spray(from the rattle can), i saw enough flakes, and determined that with the semigloss black auto paint below that this was an excellent match, so i sprayed a 2nd layer from the rattle can, this was a slightly thicker coat of paint. and then ****!!!!!!!!! Since the bumper was on the wheel chair with the front facing the cieling, and the sides hanging off and down, i began getting runs on the sides, and on the top it began webbing and blistering, webbing terribly though. It looked like what you see when someone has shattered a windshield and its still intact but just shattered. It was just ugly. On top of that, the few pieces that seemed to be "OK" or at least "marginally presentable" were now not OBP anymore, but just BLACK, the flakes seemed to be just dissapearing into the gloomy depths of th bumper. Let me include some notes, when i painted that spare piece it seemed to look perfect, the temperature where i painted was the same, and constant, i didnt do anything else or different when i painted the spare piece, so i assumed it was all going to turn out properly, except after the 1st coat, the 2nd coat was not coming out like a fine spray mist, instead it seemed to be making like bubbles, and shooting some "plops". At this point i have used half a bottle of the OBP paint from paint scratch, so it was impossible to return it. So i ate the 45dollar/ a rattle can charge and proceeded to inhale about half a pack of parliments, and have a few drinks of vodka. Next day i go to school(college) only to see what was once a beutiful piece of art work, had now transformed into something a 4 year old with a box of crayons probably did.

9. After the night of dismay, dispair, and dread, i ended up DRY-sanding all of the OBP off with either 600 or 800 grit sand paper, dont rememebr sorry. After the dry sanding when i could visibly see the rustoleum semi-gloss auto paint i would stop painting. So quick summary, dry sanding OBP, and then wet sanding for smoothness, i was back to the end of step 7.

10. It all gets better from here on. I Called up a guy my dad knows real well, who has a professional paint gun machine, as well as all the needed amenties to paint. Had him order a better batch of OBP from one of his vendors, and then getting the extreme experience of driving a Land Rover LR3(dad's other friends car) from huntington, NY to Brooklyn, NY. I dropped the bumper their, and then had them give me a crash coarse in how to use the spray gun. Sprayed the entire bumper with about 3 layers of much better OBP(excellent amount of flakes, and shine and everything), and all somewhere in or around 8 hours of time. Let the bumper dry there at the shop, and then came back the next morning on a bumperless LGT to clear coat it.

11. Came back the next morning to get a crash course in clear coating. Started clear coating. Clear coated 2 layers with a Spray gun, and then used a rattle can for any touch ups of the clear coat that seemed to be to wierd of an angle or way to spray with the gun+hose. Let it dry over night again, and picked it up in that LR3 and drove it home.

12. Test fit bumper, and fix fog light housings to fit properly with the FMIC.

lil moral of the story: Paint scratch might be really good with their products, becuase hell i know ive used the touch up paint on lil nicks and scratches on my car, but their rattle can's didnt seem to be anywhere close to excellent. The rattle can's were the black sheep in my opinion.

Hopefully this writeup helps anybody who is interested in doing this with their own bumper.

Overview:

1-JDM bumper + Fog Lights = $500

Variety of Sand papers (Grits 400, 600, 800, 1200...) $35.00

Paint Scratch OBP = $45

All in all i wasted too much time, and should had just had it painted fr 200 dollars, but it was definitly a learning experience, and definitly something to be proud of.
