I am getting ready to take off for a week of (much-deserved) vacation, so I needed my last "Forum Fix" before I left! Here are the latest Outback and Legacy reviews links. Please post any updates, additions or corrections you'd like to see. Geesh...this is becoming an encyclopedia! Enjoy!

Hey GT Ski, That Edmonds article must make the boys/girls at Suby very happy. Almost wonder if this article should not be noted on general board so others don't miss it. This article does a great job of explaining why I am buying the Leg GT/Ltd vs another BMW3 or X3. Although I think Suby has a way to go to match BMW or Audi on interior materials quality and finish, I like the simplicity, lines and driver orientation of the Suby interior better than new BMWs and as much as Audi. Bangle BMWs are looking more and more like Cadilac. Thought Edmunds was right on about the few shortcomings, but I think Suby has acknowledged these issues and I am anxious to see how fast they respond. They have already added "homelink" in last two months, which I ordered for my car. Great article, thanks
"Got the goodies: The versatile Legacy GT could be sleeper car of the year" http://www.portlandtribune.com/adxl8.cgi?id=F102104
Where did he get that the wagon weighs 300 extra pounds?

I also wonder where he came up with 300 extra pounds for the wagon. A quick look at Subaru specs show his bias against the wagon. The base 2.5i sedan with manual transmission weighs 3200 lbs, a 2.5 GT Limited wagon with an automatic transmission weighs 3500 lbs. That is where he came up with the 300 lb figure. A 2.5i sedan with manual transmission weighs 3200 lbs, a 2.5i wagon with manual transmission weighs 3255 lbs. That's a 55 lb increase for the wagon, not 300 lbs! The weight difference increases to 70 lbs when comparing the GT Limited 5MT sedan with the GT Limited 5MT wagon. Figures don't lie but Dennis Pittsenbarger figures. Go figure!

I apologize if this has been mentioned already, maybe I've missed it. The Nov 05 issue of Evo (UK car mag) features a "driven" test of a Legacy 3.0R Spec B. The article is available online but registration is required. Home page link: http://www.evo.co.uk/front_evo_homepage/front_evo_homepage.php. I won't quote it, in its entirety or partially, for obvious reasons. I thought a synopsis (as I read it) might be useful for those fighting the indecision to buy the mag/register with the evil website for a glance at the article. Overall, they were rather unimpressed with the car, managing to author a full-page article without saying anything, praise or scorn. Apparently this model gets a 6 speed manual, adapted from the STi to be more refined. They found the styling to be on the bland side of discreet and the car to be quite narrow from the rear. For some reason, they claim Subaru aimed this car at the Jaguar XJ and BMW's 5. I think they simply misunderstood Subaru's marketing campaign, that compares the Legacy with anything except airplanes and oil tankers. More blandness (or cleanliness) is found inside, although the car is refined - faint praise alert - so much so that the idle engine noise competes with the AC fan for acoustic dominance. They found the seat to be too tall in its lowest setting (I concur) and the steering wheel adjustment to be lacking. But, the wheel is small and sporty. The engine is strong and smooth, the gear ratios are well assigned. They call the ride "knobbly" around town, identified mild understeer and attributed its uninvolving drive to the numb steering (I concur again, at least with the latter part). They don't see people migrating from X Jags or 3 BMWs to this car, although it does (and will) happen at least in the US. But then again, Europe is a bit different - slightly adverse to Japanese cars, unless they've won a WR event or five. In conclusion, it's a fine car with "plenty of kit" without being a "must-have". The same issue features two more Subaru products - an STi Type-UK and a Forrester 2.5XT. My cursory glance at that article made me think they found quite a bit more good words to say about the Forrester. HTH, Dragos

The upcoming Consumer Reports tests the Outback, Volvo V50, Mazda 6, BMW X3 and Toyota Highlander wagons. It recommends the Outback and Highlander only, though it cites the Outback's at-the-limit tendency for the tail to come out, and longish braking distances, which shouldn't surprise anyone familiar with the car's stock rubber. It also says that the base flat-four is a dog off the line, but loves the headlights, steering and handling, interior, cargo capacity, pretty much everything except a few nits. It also likes the crash ratings. They said the X3 is expensive and slow, the Volvo is expensive and little plus the headlights are mediocre, etc, etc. Kevin

Some more in-depth reviews of the Aus Liberty/legacy GT 5MT. Check out the 2 reviews at the bottom. http://carpoint.ninemsn.com.au/portal/alias__carpointau/tabID__6485/ArticleID__5381/DesktopDefault.aspx So do u 5MT USDM guys also stink up the clutch on those high-rpm launches?!? :) "While these are impressive numbers at first glance, and Subaru quotes a 0-100km/h time of 5.7sec, the engine doesn't yield its best at low rpm. Indeed, unlike the cooking model 2.5i, the GT feels 'thin' and is easy to stall when manoeuvring at low speed. This trait wasn't helped by our test car's clutch which had a high (and narrow) take-up point. Was this a symptom of a hard life prior to arriving at CarPoint? Perhaps, ham-fisted punters and grippy low-profile rubber can play havoc on manual all-wheel-drive mechanicals. Certainly any attempt to launch our GT hard was accompanied with the sort of odours you'd associate with a clutch past its use-by date. Once moving, things did improve -- rapidly. Indeed, in-gear acceleration at trans-urban speeds was muscular with little of the turbo lag that beset the last generation twin-turbo Liberty B4. Change the environment to the open road and the delivery is even better. Freeway on-ramps become an event and third or fourth gear overtaking performance rivals cars twice the price and engine capacity."

But an even an auto without launching will hit better than 7.8 in 0-60.. That is the same 0-60 score they listed for the Honda Pilot! I have a GT and a Pilot and I know for a fact the LGT is a helluva lot faster than our Pilot! I sent them an email and got an autoresponse saying they will try to answer my question/comment quickly.
