absolutsnwbrdr
my newest addition to my rack.... safari basket for camping trips Originally $199 at Tractor Supply Company... marked down to $85, then again to $55 Larin Aluminum Cargo Basket with Universal Mounting Hardware 42" x 39" x 7", weight 15lbs. Maximum cargo capacity: 200lbs I tried doing a search on the internet, and I'm guessing its not made anymore, or the company went out of business. Tractor Supply here in York has 2 more if anyones interested... let me know and we could work something out. I'll have to take a better picture this weekend when I get to use it http://photos-h.ak.fbcdn.net/photos-ak-snc1/v3886/231/4/72100768/n72100768_31021935_6389490.jpg
480Nthe541
Hi everyone! So a lot of you have ordered the vinyl paint protectors through my website from this link over the last year.. I wanted to say thank you, and I hope these have all saved you from paint scuffs as they have for me. I am currently in the process of building a new online ordering store for my website, so the link to buy these will be down until I have a new one ready to post here. In the meantime if anyone wants these I always have them in stock, and can ship out same day. Just email or call and I can get you a set going. Price is still going to be $7.95 including shpping. I can accept paypal or credit cards. Contact info can be found from my website www.rowanlab.com Also, I am in the process of making some of these for other various rack pads that harm paint, like Thule, etc. and also some universal ones. Thanks again everyone contact me with any questions!
Mega Users LieutenantDan Posted May 22, 2009 Mega Users Share Posted May 22, 2009 You guys should stop messing with your goofy yakima racks and get a Thule rack. I worked at an outdoor gear shop for years and installed 100's of yakima racks and I never did like them w/ their giant q towers and the lame wavy fairing. I got a Thule rack from a sales rep and it is infinitely better. Square bars, slick looking towers w/ pads that have never scratched the paint, a symmetrical fairing, and I take it off every time I wash the car. my 2 cents, take it or leave it
Mega Users LieutenantDan Posted May 22, 2009 Mega Users Share Posted May 22, 2009 What are you guys using to carry Kayaks? I'm going to need to carry 2 - 10'ish long boats. The kayak stacker (by yakima) is by far the best system i've used. It's also the cheapest yakima or thule kayak system that i've seen. You can carry up to 4 or 6 kayaks depending on your bar width. http://kenmarksnowsports.wiredbuyer.net/yakima_files/YAK0062.jpeg

Took us 5 hours that night to put it together. The Yakima I had installed in less than 1/2 hour and is a very easy 1 man 5 minute(includes washing the pads) job to put on your car...although the fit clip system for legacy has me worried a little bit on where it anchors to the legacy. Mega Users LieutenantDan Posted May 23, 2009 Mega Users Share Posted May 23, 2009 5 hours?!?!?! Both of those systems are pretty much identical in how they are put together and how they attach to the car. Maybe that's what you get for putting a rack on an Acura. I've had my rack on for over 2 years now. If you can rock your car from side to side only by the rack, nothing's going to make it come off. rkl303
Main issue was that we couldn't get that serrated section that holds the bar in place go into the hole and sit right. After an two hours of trying we ended up dremeling part of the bar so that that the teeth would bite more into the bar and the serrated section would sit right but even then that was still another hour or two of dremeling and using brute force to force it to sit right. I could swear that this was a thread for "those WITH yakima racks", and not "those who are trying to decide between racks". I'm extremely happy with my Yakima. Fitment was perfect, and it hasnt given me any problems at all! And as far as the "pads that scratched the paint"... its not the pads themselves, its the dirt that, over time, could work its way under the pads. The vinyl protectors are just for piece of mind. So go hump your Thule somewhere else.

BAC5.2
Good. Not an issue with my car. Outbacks have raised rails. I'll pick up my rail grab on Monday. If you need them, Hudson Trail Outfitters in Rockville MD has a set of Low-Riders still in stock. That'd do the trick for you I think. Or Yakima may replace yours with the old style. For those who wanted to see pics of the RailGrab problem: http://lh6.ggpht.com/_xOYp--eoWes/Sd7DzF1_w0I/AAAAAAAAE9o/mYL8VTBgOj8/s640/IMG_0928.JPG http://lh4.ggpht.com/_xOYp--eoWes/Sd7Dz2zCMzI/AAAAAAAAE9w/DMuhO7GOTTM/s640/IMG_0932.JPG http://lh6.ggpht.com/_xOYp--eoWes/Sd7Dz1nIkxI/AAAAAAAAE94/T8mEClRxdpE/s640/IMG_0930.JPG http://lh3.ggpht.com/_xOYp--eoWes/Sd7D0QKjBWI/AAAAAAAAE-A/yr9eWQM_VD8/s640/IMG_0938.JPG Flip Key Development Thread "Genius may have its limitations, but stupidity is not thus handicapped." - E. BAC5.2
I just picked up a Railgrab setup for my 09 Outback. Fitment is odd. You can have it sit flush on the top, and look detached, or sit it up, and have a 1/4" gap. Either way, I was expecting a better fit coming from many years of selling, installing and owning Yakima products. dcris
Get the EZ Rider. That one does fit. QFT! Just got mine and installed my rack today...much better fitment than the Railgrab, which incidentally are currently on eBay. Gotta recoup the costs! joedirtae09
i took my rack off after a couple months... i noticed it was damaging the rubber right above the window. seems like the yakima racks fit better on the wagons....
Arcteryx
Sorry for the necrobump...I have a Yakima roof rack with Q-towers that I used to use with my WRX wagon that I now need to fit on my '06 Legacy GT wagon. Looks like I have 3-options: 1. Railgrabs (most expensive) 2. Control tower+landing pad 3. New Q-clips for the towers (don't really want to go this route...much rather use the existing rails and/or crossbars) 4. Move all the hardware (Hully rollers and Mako saddles) over to the factory crossbars using Mighty Mounts - main drawback here is the width between the factory rails might be too narrow to get two boats side-by-side. Does anyone know which Landing Pad model is supposed to fit? Yakima's site isn't much help because it assumes you either want to use the factory rail or factory crossbar but not the factory track.
