AVO DP metal core looks ceramic???

Somehow I was under the impression from RalliTek's site that they were selling the AVO downpipe with a HFC of the metal substrate kind. So why did I open the box today to find this:

Flash was shut off on last pic so as to be able to actually READ the stamped numbers on the shield.

This site lists a similar part number and someone suggests its a Random CAT: http://www.focusfanatics.com/forum/showthread.php?t=66415

This site (SuperCat) seems to say this is a Magnaflow Universal Catalytic Converter 53000 Round Series, which matches the pic I've posted:

Here is a web link showing the difference between a metal and ceramic cat:

http://www.surefloexhaust.com.au/balisticcat01.htm

So, needless to say, from web research, it looks like this is NOT a metal substrate HFC. A bit disappointed! Needless to say, I'll be calling them tomorrow! I did not pay $600 for a ceramic cat thinking I was getting a metal cat!

Why does RalliTek's page show 2 different DPs, cat-wise???

Sounds like Rallitek made a mistake in the advertising. I was always under the impression that the AVO downpipe had a CARB legal ceramic cat.

yeah, maybe a mistake in advertising or part number listing...cause AVO sells a metal cat DP and a ceramic cat DP.

RalliTek lists the ceramic part number with a metal cat title. grrrr!

They're both the same price too!

Good to know this piece of into since I was about to order this DP. Aren't Metal cats usually more expensive and flow better?

You would think that AVO wouldn't charge the same price for both pieces.

CARB legal cats are very expensive and directly comparable in cost to metallic substrate cats. It's no surprise that the two variants cost the same.

Except AVO lists the metal substrate cat as CARB legal as well.

It could be another mistake in advertising though.

its still a cast outlet right ? i thought i saw a post where avo said they use stainless steet instead because japanese market dont like the cast look

Yep... The NA's are cast outlets but the JDM twin scroll AVO DPs aren't.

Also, when AVO releases their twin scroll kits they will have a new cast twin scroll bellmouth that can replace non twin scroll bellmouth on our NA AVO DPs.

For the USDM market, both cermaic and metal cats have bolted cast mouths.

I don't know what is what for other markets.

I spoke with RalliTek on Thursday, and they are aware of the part number issue. From what RT says, AVO likes to change part numbers really quick without telling anyone. They are going to get ahold of Ross in Japan and get this straightened out for me.

We'll see what goes on.

According to AVO website:

Metal cat DP: 2005-525

Ceramic cat DP: 2005-500
