The only thing better than track time is...

free track time! A local Nissan dealership sponsored a track session today at Autobahn Country Club in Joliet. We were able to get on the track during the lunch break. Not as fast as a normal day, but free is free and it was fun to have such a large group of Z's. Thought my track calender was done for the season, but today got the itch started again. Looks like I need to find another match in the fall schedule.

Took a few pics in the member's paddock area:

Sweet arse Vantage

The driver of this Porsche is a track member. The car has a great story. It was originally purchased in 1975 by Hugh Heffner and given to the 1975 playmate of the year in Chicago. It was then sold to a local doctor, then the current owner bought it. Really pretty color in person. The car is the same age as me!

This Viper is a regular on the One Lap of America. He's been at several track events I've attended this summer and is one of the sexiest exhaust notes you'll ever hear. Full tubular chassis... and when you peak inside, cruise control!

There were a handful of Atoms running on the North circuit. If you've never heard one in person, they sound like a two cycle motor in a metal garbage can... as it passes you and disappears into the 4 cylinder distance

nice pics and a great day for it. that AM Vantage is one fine looking machine. bosco

You would have felt right at home. you couldn't throw a rock and not hit a Z06 in the paddock area. I think they were breeding inbetween sessions!

yes, free is nice.. I've been "free" on-track for over 2 years now.

NASA Mid-Atlantic region has a way for anyone to get some free-track time as well. Volunteers are always welcome ;)

Wow. Looks like a nice old 240/260Z in the 2nd to last picture. My stepdad had a 1970 240Z bought from Bob Sharp in Wilson, Connecticut. We new Paul Newman when pop went to pick up the car since Paul was driving for Sharp Racing at the beginning of his SCCA days.

That old Z was sweet.

how do the Z06's stack up against the other cars in terms of performance? bosco

I've been passed by more of them that I passed myself.

no matter how fast you think you are there is always someone faster even for them. kudos to you and Tim for upholding our honor. :) bosco

It's not the Z06's going past that bother me... it's the Miata on coilovers and R-comps with a bumper sticker that says "I'm ghey" that really gets me.

The basic capabilities of the mix of vehicles that show up along with any power and handling mods that people have done to their cars as well as driver skill all make it interesting. Sometimes the mix is skewed toward the higher end sports cars and dedicated track cars while other events will be attended by more daily driver Mustangs, WRXs, EVOs, Hondas, etc though some of these are heavily modified.

I have enough events under my belt that I would probably be allowed to go out with the advanced group sessions but I stick with intermediate so I don't have to constantly be watching my mirror to stay out of the way of the exotics and track cars that pretty much excel around the entire track.

There's been a time I was ahead of a Z06 and because of the Legacy's AWD I could get back deep into the throttle around the apex and let the car drift to the outside of the exit and onto the straight while the RWD Corvette had to wait until he was further into the exit before putting the power down. So on exit into the start of the straight I was walking on him but obviously once he could fully put his foot into it he was quickly right on my tail by the end of the straights so I pointed him by. Another time there was an Elise following me. I had to basically tiptoe around a series of tight corners due to understeer and the Elise could have taken them much more quickly so I pointed him past me as track etiquette dictates. Except on the long straight after these tight turns I was way faster than him. Two laps later he waved me back in front of him as he was holding my up on the longer straights.

It's fun to see how your car compares to others but my main reason for doing track events is to explore the capabilities of my car and myself in a fairly safe environment (much safer than on the road) and attempt to continually improve my driving skills and understanding of how my car responds to me.
