Shortened my STI STS

As most of you may know, the STI STS has relatively short throws but is pretty long in length. I shortened mine by about an inch today and it made a surprising difference and best of all it was free. I used a die and cut the threads on the shaft as far as I could and then sawed off about an inch. All you really need is an M12-1.25 die. You can really only go about an inch because the raised "nub" on the shaft prevents the shift knob from screwing on any farther. In the future I may grind that off and shorten it even more but for now im pretty happy with the zero cost 1" difference.

When I finished I went for a drive up to Mountain Lake Virginia(about 15 minutes away from Virginia Tech). The twisty mountain roads are serious fun in this car (much better than my 92 Cherokee I just replaced with my LGT).

This is great info.

I am picking up my STI STS later this week, and this will be very usefull. I also change my shift knob to one I had made some time ago, but it sits further down the shaft than normal.

I may have to look into picking up a die.

Yep there is a pretty good diff with 1" removed. 2" would be nice but that will require the removal the shifter from the car to grind down that raised ring inorder to thread it further down. If i end up doing that i will post the results.

I took off the most i could and now the shift knob threads right down to that raised ring. So 1" max without grinding it off. I did not include a picture after i cut the inch off but if you look at the second picture- I cut half of that threaded region off(the lower half is the part where i cut new threads).

Update:

I still wasn't happy with the shifter length or the shift knob. I cut it down even more(nearly 3" shorter than original). I also bought a shift knob from an 07 Mustang that goes with the interior perfectly. It also happened to have the same thread specs as my factory Subaru knob. The shifts are super tight and the knob fits in my hand much better. I have way too much extra boot now but that will be a job for another time.

Total cost: Free + 30 for the new knob.
