holy disintegrated throwout bearing...

how does something like this happen? this explains the lack of pedal pressure and the non-disengaging clutch....the fork wasnt pushing anything.... AND it ate the snout... the tranny is fine mechanically but the case is useless....

time to get on the horn with SOA....

Have you ever had clutch work done. Looks like someone had only one of the two clutch fork prongs into the throwout bearing. It will work....for a while. This is an easy mistake on our cars. It could run for 20,000 miles, then break. Absolutly!

It places a side load on the bearing, and may slip out, or break the one tab it is catching on the bearing. Seen it many times! Parts flying everywhere fast, and often it's hard to tell what broke first.

You need a new case now!

Take a close up pic of your release fork...the pointed ends. Front and back. I'll show you what happened.

I would get a machine shop to make a sleeve to press on the case, to replace the snout. All it does it provide a guide for the bearing to slide on. It could be a sloppy fit...so what? The tranny seal is way behind that.

If you trash that tranny....can I have it?:icon_bigg

Go slap you mechanic!

(Well, maybe give him a hug for a free tranny?)

I am 101% sure this is what happened.

Your release fork will tell the story!

That would be my guess. Who did it? Did they give you any warranty with the work?

How many miles ago was the engine replaced?

South Coast Subaru..... it was there with 16.6k, now i have 37~38k....

it was really heart breaking when it came out.... i was hoping for a chunked clutch...:(

Oh, also look inside the hole on the fork, where it pivots. You probably will see where it was crooked and wearing an area on the inside radius. Look for one side to be worn on the front, and the other side back .:)

Good luck trying to get a mechanic to admit something like this, but the parts should be enough to prove what happened. If I was there, I'd make my point very clear, with facts!

(Edit) Well, that looks a little different than the older legacys and WRXs I've worked on. Looks like a push type fork? Forgive me, I haven't torn apart my newer legacy quite yet. Forget about the piviot and hole thing.

Looks like the drivers side was in there, and the pass side was not. That's what I see.....could be wrong? It's happened once before.

Wipe the gizz off your screen. LOL!

Take a good set of pics of the REAR (back-side) of the fork. You should see shiny worn areas on both sides, I only see it on the drivers side. I see the pass side looks too dirty with only the older signs of wear from before the engine swap. I'm talking about the rectangular sized wear marks, near the end of the two prongs, on the back side. On the front of the fork, there would have been wear on both sides, even if the fork was in crooked, so that means nothing., One side would be "in the grove", with wear on both sides of the fork......... the other side pushing against the wrong part of the throwout bearing, "out of the groove". Wear only on the front of the fork, no sign of recent wear on the back..

(just kidding Rob)

well, you got one pic of the back. Hmmm. Hard to tell. Do you see the area I'm talking about?

What a dirty mess.

I wish I was there to have a look.

What bad luck!

I think the tranny case can be saved if you don't get SOA to help. Maybe try calling Andrew at www.gearboxtech.com

www.andrewtechautomotive.com

I think he has done a "save-the-day" repair similar to this.

Definately a push type fork.. There are also no retainer clips that hold the TOB in place. The fork just sits there on the bearing.

I guess too much heat may help to get the grease out of the throwout bearing, or too much dust and bad seals, or just old age...and they start squealing when dry and then lockup. Just like any skateboard style ball-bearing would, before it bites the dust. Ever heard an alt. bearing squeal, or even a shopping cart.

I'm sure they could fail other ways?

But, I have installed a fork wrong, and the car ran great for thousands of miles, then the bearing tab broke and the whole thing came apart. Just like that...no warning. I realized my mistake after looking at the parts very carefuly. That was an expensive mistake for me.

BMorrisJ... Did the clutch feel any diffrent/ unusual after installation?

the entire engine assembly was replaced 20k/mi ago... including the clutch assembly (fly, disk, pp, tb)

the only warning i got was a slight whirring when off of the clutch... this was two days before... and the day it happened i drove all the way to the mountains, round trip 140mi. i get 4 houses down from home and the clutch is pushing back at me then losing pressure, then the squeaks and clanks and stinking comes, i had to rev match into 2nd without the clutch....also major hiccups while im trying to get up the driveway to park...
