Good News - I Finally Solved My Legacy GT Problems

Recommended Posts

Congrats on the Mazda. I also like the new Mazda CX7. I can also related the BS from SOA. Good luck.

P.S. What color is it. This picture is at night so I can't tell if it is black or burgundy? Whatever it is I like.

The color is Black Cherry Mica. In the right light it looks like a dark cherry cola color.

If you like the looks of the CX-7, hit your dealer - they are offering low apr, immense discounts and subsidized lease deals here in MA.

They seem to be very competitive with the OBXT in terms of interior room, but cost thousands less. With EPA 18/24 I'm curious what the RW mpg will be.

Do they use the Haldex AWD system, or Ford's?

You're right about the loans. Since basically I buy a new car every couple of years, I went with the lease option on this one. No points, no deposit, easy finance. Mazda said that the car just came out in September so they are trying really hard to get it out into the market. No other car type on their lot had the same incentives as the CX7.

Looks a DAMMMM sight better then the Tri-fugly B9 though!! Congrats on the new purchase Infymus!

Oh yeah, like I said - I drove a B9 around for a weekend. It just felt so cheap inside. The plastic reminded me something out of a Ford Escort. The NAV system was so far in the dash it was hard to see, and I always had to lean forward to adjust anything on it. They claim "SEATS 7!" but those last two people had better be no taller than 3 feet or they are going to have to sit hunched over. I took it back. They wanted $38k for it and offered NO incentives, no cash back and an interest rate at 5.9%. Oh hell no.

I like the styling of the B9 on the outside - not too bad, but this CX7 beats it hands down. It is so strange going from so many Subies to a crossover CUV (not a SUV). It doesn't seem really "BIG", but when you get in and drive it, you feel like you're sitting way up - it is taking me some getting used to.

I've had a 1992 Legacy L, 1994 Legacy GT Turbo, 2002 WRX, 2002 LLB Wagon, 2004 VDC Sedan, 2004 LLB Wagon, and two 2005 LGT - Wagon and Sedan. It just seems to me that Subaru has been raising the prices on their cars, but not increasing the quality and the goodies. AND I WANT GOODIES. To put goodies on a Suby, you will pay PAY PAY.

Only things so far that I have found annoying are; The leather wrapped steering wheel is really tight leather so my hands slip around on it allot. I like the MOMO much better. The fan system for heat/cooling seems inadequate for the interior compartment size. This morning it was 22F and it took it over 15 minutes to heat it. Its like it could use about five more fan speeds higher.

Other than that, no issues. Turbo kicks in on this at 2500 RPMS rather than 3200-3500 on the LGT. But you gotta imagine a 2.3 intercooled engine having to push 5050 pounds of CUV forward - it moves, but nothing like my 300 HP 350 T legacy. Gotta expect that.

I love not having to use keys. NO KEYS. Just get in, and turn the nob to turn it on. Get out, it locks itself. I love getting up in the morning, and turning the car on remotely so it is warmed up when I get out to it.

NAV system is great, love the tilt features and how close to me and easy it is to use. I can push a voice button and say I'M HUNGRY! and it will pop up all the nearest restaurants. We programmed in one and then purposefully didn't follow the course. It auto-corrected and plotted a new course each time. The voice can be changed from female to male if you prefer that.

The seat heaters work fast and well. Just wish they had more than ON or OFF like the LGT has.

Steering wheel controls rock, and the BOSE audio system is insane with base and quality.

Subaru needs to stand up and take notice - this beats the B9 hands down. I don't know about long term effects like warranty issues, manufacturer details and so forth – like how long will parts last, will my door handle fall off in six months, etc. I’m new to MAZDA, always been a Suby guy. But after the troubles with this LGT and troubles I have had before with LLB model lines (warped brakes, miscellaneous things breaking down), I decided there was nothing left on the Suby lot that I wanted to move into since the B9 was so cheap and highly priced.

Cheers!

And go from 300 HP 350 TQ down to what less than a WRX in HP?

No thanks. I want an upgrade, not a downgrade!

You got an upgrade . . . for the passenger seat. I love people who can't appreciate the RX-8.

But I hope you enjoy your CX-7 anyway.

Good luck w/ the car. My neighbor picked one up recently and loves it. I'd love to get out of my LGT but alas I'm trapped in a lease. Thats the one thing about leases, you better be damn sure you like the car because they're very hard to get out of. Man at this point I'd take anything else as long as it isnt a Subaru.

Good thing you're on a subaru enthusiast site then!;)

I like our mazda. I like how they package options..Our 5 is very well equipped for a reasonable price. It is one of my frustrations with Subaru. When it comes to the Impreza you either get a base or go to the wrx . I really wanted something in between with a sunroof. I drove a CX7 when i was at the mazda dealer. I think its def one of the better looking suv's on the market. Do you have to run premium in it?

My sister has a Mazda MPV. Well built and sporty minivan. I like it alot.

IMHO, Mazda builds nice cars.

As mentiioned, they do a good job with content. We have one (MPV) as well, but I've never owned one built in Flat Rock. I wish Subaru would make their grilles from the same stuff.

The CX7 is kind of odd looking. I think they're just trying to keep their numbers up with all the incentives. If I bought one I'd be irate, since those programs murder resale value.

There's an article in AutoWeek that details Ford's plans for platform sharing:

Ford Focus (Europe)

Ford Focus C-Max (Europe)

Ford Focus Coupe-Cabriolet (Europe)

Volvo S40

Volvo V50

Volvo C30

Volvo C70

Mazda3

Mazda5

Mazda CX-7

Yes, it's a 2.3 intercooled turbo, so premium gas is recommended.

You're right about the options, you just don't have that many options with Subaru.

VVG, what do you mean murdering resale value? I'm just curious.

Subsidized leases create demand for a vehicle that wouldn't exist. So when they come off lease, there is a relative oversupply.

Toyota is offering rebates for the first time on several models and the owners are screaming bloody murder.

The CX-7 is more of a mainstream vehicle than a Legacy GT or other enthusiast car. But you made a wise move to lease it in this case - there is going to be a glut of cute-utes and Crossovers in a few years. As long as you don't go over the mileage or get hit with reconditioning charges you should be able to drive it pretty cheaply.

I believe this is using the Haldex AWD system like the Volvos. Supposedly the new ones work better. I think it's a 90% FWD bias.

There's a review of the Grand Touring model on Jalopnik. Some quotes:

To 2006 eyes, it looks like the offspring of an incestuous union between the Nissan Murano and Infiniti FX, who -- unwilling to suffer the shame -- left it on Mazda's steps to be raised as its goofy own....

Turbo lag, combined with an automatic transmission, means not only are stoplights tricky, but you're likely to be in the wrong gear when cresting an apex. That's too bad because when the 2.3 liter MZR DISI Turbo 4 gets its boost on, you're strapped into what feels like the world's fastest minivan....

If I were to teleport you into the CX-7 tooling along at freeway speed and told you it was a Toyota Sienna, you wouldn't argue. Even with the fancy suspension bits, the ride is smooth and comfortable....

A six-speed automatic means the porky CX-7 can cruise at 80 mph with the engine spinning at barely 2,500 rpm, which is good, because the high-output engine sips premium only. But since Mazda gifted this guy with the Miata's wheel, why not raid deeper and give it something approximating the Miata's perfect gearbox? The manual mode, like most, is not suited to an enthusiast's needs....

Despite being a useless minivan, I mean a useless SUV, I mean a pudgy performance car, I like the CX-7. All of my friends with young families will be hearing about it; Mazda's crossover might be the ideal vehicle for making 3:00 am Huggies runs....

Why You Should Buy This Car: You like sitting up high, but need a semblance of sport from your car. You think "drug-addled catfish" is the new design chic. You're five-and-a-half feet tall and prefer just to step sideways to get in and out. You need to lug a few cases of wine home after the Thursday-night tasting.

So now you can "feel" sporty in a vehicle that actually accelerates only as well as a Hyundai Entourage minivan instead of driving something that can really move?

Mazda specs:

http://www.edmunds.com/apps/vdpcontainers/do/vdp/articleId=109915/pageNumber=2

Hyuundai specs:

http://www.motortrend.com/oftheyear/car/112_0701_2007_coty_testing/2007_hyundai_entourage.html

I mean, just like all the other "crossovers" , it's an okay car but it's nothing similar to the Legacy except it happens to have a turbo. The rest is pure marketing. After all, it wouldn't sell nearly as well if their advertising said "Keep up with the minivan next to you!"

I wish automakers hadn't abandoned the hatchback. You'd have all the usefulness of their, uhm, "crossovers" without having to camouflage them as a more-manly vehicle.

Bosco - no, I haven't had ANY of those problems with the LGT Wagon - it being an automatic. The only problem I have had was two plastic bolts on the seat protector broke and were replaced under warranty. My wife drives it so I have done nothing except a K&N Filter.

I might add that that there is a major difference in price between the Legacy GT Wagon and the GT Sedan. Both of my cars had nearly equal mileage and both are in excellent condition. Sedan had 9500 miles on it, and wagon has 10200 miles on it. However, the Sedan came in at trade-in at $19,500 while I cannot find anyone who will give me more than $16,500 for the wagon. Even the Subaru dealership told me last June that they only buy three our four GT wagons at a time because they can't sell them very well. And if they were to buy my wagon, they'd just have to send it off to auction because it would sit on their used car lot forever.

Lucky for me Mazda took very good care of me and didn't inflate the price of the CX7 to give me "more" for my GT sedan. When I was shopping around, a Honda dealership in SLC (Ken Garff) were totally aggressive, brought only ONE deal to the table, and offered me $17000 for my LGT Sedan. The lease option on any vehicle was 39 months with $1000 bucks down - or more - and the guy just gave me an incredibly bad feeling so I got up and walked out. His last words were "Comon, let's work this deal!" to which I stated, "You already worked it."

Some dealerships are just that. Some are kind, considerate, friendly and honest, while others are out to make a buck and don't see you or your car as anything more than a dollar sign.

For anyone still subscribed to this thread, there has been an interesting turn of events.

The Mazda dealership inspected my LGT and could not find a CAT on the car. The inspector didn't realize the Cobb HF Pipe had a CAT. So he called the State inspector who came down and with charts in hand, could not find a cat. So he immediately marked the car state wide as illegal and now the dealership can't sell it. Idiot Mazda guy should have called me first.

When the State inspector plugged in the inspection equiptment - they found that the car showed no CEL codes and get this: was running CLEANER that stock, yet, it was marked illegal.

So I'm bringing the stock pipe back to the dealership so they can put it on and they're giving me the Cobb pipe back. So that is something else I can sell for cash back.

They may have had to replace it with stock emmisions gear anyway, as the laws concerning replacement of cats is pretty narrow minded. Has to be stock under federal law if I am not mistaken.
