Had a good time at Speedventures track event at Buttonwillow raceway in CA. Always a good trackday when you can keep in on the track and avoid big car problems.

Ran all day on Friday. Man, it was hot. Outside temp gauge said 101F in the pits and 112F on the track. Not ideal for boosted cars, so having a FMIC sure felt good. Played nicely with a Caddy CTS V. Very impressed with its stock brakes. 14" rotors all four corners with pads big enough to stop a Mac truck.

Unfortunately, the video camera acted up on my best session and I didn't get any good vid. I do have some vid of running the track CW on Friday and CCW on Sat. but nothing really worth watching.

After doing a half dozen track events, you'd think I'd learn by now that its all about traction....NOT power. Running on my Yokohama AVS100s was like putting training wheels on a racecar. Sliding around all the corners. Spinning all 4 wheels out of corners. Just plain stupid to have not bought myself a set of track wheels or more specifically track tires to run on. Wish I had traded wheels with Jose so I'd at least have his Falken RT615s.

Saw lots of rides with Nitto and Advan track tires. Several were running Hoosiers. So I got passed about 10 times more than I did the passing on.

Still a lot of fun.

Lots of "off track" episodes on both days. Saw a silver 05 'Vette slide into a wall of tires and badly mar the right front fender. Worse was seeing a STI slide off the same turn into the same wall of tires and completely smash in the right side of the car from the front to the rear. I mean the whole right side of the car was crunched in about 3-4 inches. Tow truck time.

Witnessed a Lotus Elise go into a high-speed turn to hot and the rear end lightend up. He spun it twice around at about 80 mph yet never left the tarmac. Put up a big cloud of white tire smoke. No harm, no foul. He was back at it after coming into the pits to check for flat spotting.

Didn't plan on running Sat. because the event was already sold out for Sat./Sun. when I tried to register about a week ago. But a nice guy in a STI ran into turbo oil line/seal problems after just the 2nd session on Sat. So we asked the guys running the show and they said I could take his place in the Intermediate group. Got four full sessions for FREE! Sorry for your car problems....but thanks Randy.

Hoping for some decent in-car video taken from a guy's helmet cam. He rode along with me for the last session of the day on Sat. By that time my weak-ass street tires were gumballs of rubber and my right front rotor was showing signs of heavy wear. He still said it was a blast and remarked that my SZ55 equipped Leggy could really haul arse.

Took lots of pics of various cars at the event so I'll post them up here.

Enjoy.....

yeah, that's right. Over 100k miles on this WRX wagon. They guy has swapped out a "version 8" STI JDM longblock engine. It had a mean equal-length header growl to it.

GOTO:Racing team brought out their WRX on Friday. Unfortunately they left the track-prepped LegacyGT at home. Those dudes were the class of the field (naturally). They told me the engine had some recent work on it so they had it restricted to wastegate boost. No trouble. They set the best lap time of the day at 1:58 min. Most every other REALLY GOOD run was in the 2:15 min. range.

And what a kick ass rig.

Is that a bullethole on the back of that legacy?

that's one of those stupid stickers that seem to be popular among wanna-be hip-hoppers. they look like bullet holes. if I would have noticed it on there myself I would have ripped it off.

I didn't specifically see the tires that GOTO was running but they were surely the top-of-the-line track comp. I mean.....did you see that rig!?

Probably be looking for another event at BW or Streets around late Nov. or early Dec.

need time for the wallet to recover. and (God willing) find a way of obtaining a set of R-comps without having to shell out like a $1 grand.

It was a full field, but Buttonwillow is plenty long enough for the cars to spread out well. Very few traffic jams. Good track protocols were followed. I really like a venue that uses the "pass-by signal" at any point on the track instead of a few designated zones. Speedventures runs a tight ship. They aren't the cheapest. But they do it right.

Here's a compilation of lots of brief shots taken at the "notorious" corner where a couple cars crashed out. I didn't catch the big ones but you get the idea how some folks went in too hot. Its actually a double-apex corner but you can only really see the 2nd turn in the vid. There's a cool spin-out at the end.

Hey Kevin, it was really nice chatting with you on Friday. Glad you had a good time. As I said I think you should ditch those AVS100's for something a little more suited to your talents as well as the potiential of your ride (what a awesome setup LGT you have!!) I only wish we could mod the Grand Am LGT to that kind of mod level :)

For those wondering we were testing a new motor and new driver in USTCC WRX that has been retired, we added a couple of mods not legal for USTCC in the aim of bringing the power up and using the vehicle for a test setup for our drivers for the NASA 25hr Endurance race in Decemeber (we have a fully built 96 L which is lite and powerful so the drivers are practicing).

We ran the car at wastegate spring and on a couple of sets of last years Hankook C50's (USTCC spec tire) I would imagine with Hoosiers and this setup we would be a little faster.

If anyone is going to Infinoen this coming weekend we will likely be running this car at it's proper boost setting for some more testing, we may even bring out the LGT :D

Mike
