VDC Stereo Installed - works perfectly

It is the stereo from the Outback VDC and it plays MP3s. I have no idea about the steering wheel controls, the connector is there but you would need everything else (the wiring to the steering wheel and the wheel itself. Here is a link to the pictures http://www.legacygt.com/forums/showthread.php?t=3393 Here is a link to the innards of the stock radio and HVAC controls and why, IMHO, there will never be an aftermarket DIN plate http://www.legacygt.com/forums/showthread.php?t=2977

Let me get this straight - you bought a radio/acc unit from a VDC model over the counter, plugged it in place of delivered unit, you got MP3 capability and a 6cd changer? What model OB are we talking here- MY and spec level??? Down here in Oz I dont think the 6cd unit is offered outside the Top line models. From talking to people here it looks like the head unit is Kenwood, and the one shown in the reated thread is obviously Matsushita/Panasonic. Down here they charge A$990 for the optional 10cd changer (no mp3) under the pax seat. thanks, jp

rao, Good Move, Great Work! I loved my 10 cd/mp3 deck with FM modulator in my last vehicle. Great to be on the road with 150+ albums at my finger tips. (On the road always). I was crushed when I learned I could not install it in my new OB. Since I hate dragging a lot of CD's around, I tried a small lighter plug-in FM-transmitter with a built in USB port for memory stick or any other USB device. I'm plugging in a Lexar 1GB Jump Drive and accessing 13-15 full albums on the road. Yeah, loss in quality, but I am old enough to remember my first 8-Track car stereo, so I can handle it until make the move you did to get it resolved. I do like the easy, quick, music of my choice in any vehicle I happen to jump into (including rentals) at any given moment by just plugging this unit into the lighter. The Lighter Plug-In Modulator cost 24 bucks at Checker Auto http://www.virtualrealitysoundlabs.com/vr3_fmmod.html For that amount, I can put up with the dampened quality until I can make the move you did and just purchase the VDC Radio. Not that expensive since I have not invested 300+ in an i-Pod that I cannot direct wire into my OB. The stock 6-CD changer with sub/w sounds fine to me in the OB and I am confident that the VDC unit will be just fine playing my mp3's. I am a bit handicapped and have a hard time crawling around trying to do work under/in the dash of the OB if I drive to Naperville from AZ after I purchase the VDC unit, will you help me get it into my OB?

I just bought a Belkin Portable Music TuneCast for $29.99 (Amazon.com). It tunes to any station and has presets. Takes 2 AAAs (I use rechargables). Again, not "steller" sound but fair. For $30 it's worth a shot--zero installation time and you can plug anything into it. Heck, you can try it and return it. I'd like the VDC mp3 system as well--just not sure I want to shell out the $600. It's kind of sad and humorous when my 95 honda has a better stereo in it (pioneer that plays mp3 disks, has external inputs, etc) than my 2005 legacy :-)

The 600 beans for the VDC mp3 conversion looks better every time I go to the i-Pod Direct Connection forum! (15 pages) http://legacygt.com/forums/showthread.php?t=2936&page=15&pp=10 If I convert my hourly worth into the time it would take to read through that forum in its entirety, I can already afford my new radio! Those techo-weenies must have more time on their hands then most! :D

They dont do a RHD VDC head unit with MP3.....and the unit looks different from mine - AAC buttons are different layout, radio buttons on other side etc, so not a proposition here. No sympathy from Subie dealer either. Bugger! jp
