Fitting a tow bar to an Aus Liberty GT

I got my hitch from etrailers.com

It's the Drawtite 2" Class3. Fits pretty good, and it does the job pretty well. Not as awesome as the Aussie hitch, but it was like 1/5th the price.

Now that I'm lower than that, I noticed it would scrape if I had my shackle installed. Removed it, and I've never had a problem. I just keep it in the back now during the winter when I go pulling people out of the snow.

Great info, thanks SBT- With the trunk empty going up to the campground I was fine, but I was a little low in the rear coming back with more weight in the trunk.

I packed all I could in the back of the trailer- 60 pounds of wood in the back helped.

I'm 5EAT- no trans. cooler yet, was considering it. I don't pull though mountains much but will next summer I'm sure. Any suggestions on a good one to get?

I do plan on a new suspension when funds allow. My left side is 3/8" lower than the right, and that just bugs me. I'm at almost 70k on the stock ride, so I'm thinking it may be about time to change anyway.

Great walkthrough here. Installation pdf is in post #234 (post #1 link is dead)

Towing exacerbates the lack of damping in the stock setup and really decreases the service life of the stock setup IME. Recommend the Bilstein HDs/Swifts or /Pinks or /ION strut/spring combo versus CO suspension to replace your stock setup.

I agree with SBT. My car towed like crap before I swapped out the struts. It's so much more controlled now, it's easy to forget there is a trailer back there. Even when fully loaded:

You are a bad influence SBT. My wife wants a word or two with you for spending her money.....

: )

Seriously, thanks for the help.

BAC- could you list exactly what struts you used please? I've got a lot to learn about suspension, so I might as well get started...

Thanks-

I have Bilstein HD's and OEM JDM Spec-B Rev-A Wagon springs. It was not a simple task sourcing everything.

I really like it. I go back and forth about machining some spacers to lift the car up about an inch, but haven't done it yet.

Unfortunately, I have no idea how you'd be able to replicate my setup. The springs don't exist anymore, and I have no idea where you'd get them.

I got mine from the guy who bought Matt's. Does he have several sets and/or can import them?

Just recalled that he had at least one set of these and sold them, possibly to another member. Wasn't sure it that was you or not. I'm going to attempt sourcing the JDM Spec B Rev A Billies wagon springs. Not sure how that will go.

So you want the same springs I have?

You'll like them, I think.

Correction on my post...JDM Rev A Billies and Spec B Wagon Springs. Have heard/read that the Rev As are the closest to the HDs with slightly better valving and the Spec B Wagon Springs enable you to make the most of the Bilstein travel - read: You don't have to cut the bump stops.

But - I digress and am taking this too far OT. BOT to discussion about Tow Hitches.

Just get the HD's. I guarantee that you will overpay for the used JDM struts.

  • 1 month later...

Here's a picture from my first trip- Family in the car and fully loaded for a weekend.

Took it down to the Oregon Coast last month, 1000+ miles total, and it towed great. So great that I blew a trailer tire at 65 and passing, and didn't notice it until the guy waved at me. Surprised me because I was keeping an eye on the trailer as we had just gone though a construction zone and something was clicking as we hit bumps (slop in the receiver I think). Anyway, I had just checked the mirrors less than 15s prior (just before the pass), but when I checked again the right-rear was obviously angled down in the mirror. I ended up with two rubber donuts, and no tread on the wheel.

Put the spare on out in the desert in 105 degrees heat, drove an hour to Les Schwab, and bought two new tires. Luckily it was a Friday afternoon, and everything was open. They got me setup in not much over an hour, and we got back on the road again.

I checked the tires before we left home, but not when we left the campground. I'm guessing that somehow I got a leak, ran it flat and it overheated and blew. The tires were not that old, had good tread, no cracks, etc...

No thanks to the Destinator GPS app on my car computer though, it had me searching for a Les Schwab in an abandoned building in the wrong town, among other heinous crimes it tried to commit upon us.

Hey Matty C, what tool did you use to cut the bumper?

I just used a Stanley knife (utility knife, not sure if the term Stanley knife is commonly used outside of Aus).

These days I use a Dremel for cutting stuff like that, as the knife can slip really easily, leaving you with a much bigger hole than required :-)

Wow - big bump from the dead.

Yeah, I sold the Liberty a few years back and got a WRX, so I haven't been on here in a while.

I just noticed a big spike in the usage logs of the website that hosts those images of the towbar install, so I thought I'd see where all the extra traffic was coming from!

Has anybody tried to fit a tow bar & bike rack to their car. I'm too short to manage a roof rack. i need some advice...

I use one of these...

http://www.thule.com.au/details.php?p_id=242&listid=2&slistid=&seo=Thule_954_Ridgeline_4_Bike

and it's been great! It doesn't make the car ride too low in the back, but I do have pretty light bikes :-)

I live in an apartment with a low roof in the underground carpark, so I've avoided getting roofracks because I don't trust myself enough not to forget the bikes are up there and drive straight in, ripping them off the roof!

Another downside of roof racks was unexpected. I put my bike up on a mate's roofrack mounted bike carrier for a 700km drive down to Melbourne, and I'm still finding bug guts in funny places. I've cleaned it a few times since, but the bugs got inside the brake levers, up under the water bottle holders, under the seat, it's a nightmare.

I guess that's why there's a market for this sort of thing...

Matty - good to hear from you man. Your tow hitch installation write-up was one of the best on the site at the time. Still send people, who are able to get your hitch, to your OP how-to gouge.

I'm wondering if the rating is in KG or LBS. 1800 kilos = 3.9K lbs, which seems about right for a Class III hitch.

3900lbs is the rating.

In case I wasn't clear, I meant that that was about right for a Class III on a 4th-=5th Gen Legacy (which includes the Outback) chassis.
