Where is my 6th Gear???

Recommended Posts

Crusing at 70mph I am at 3000rpm. What is up with that. I have the 5spd. My city is 20.5mpg average and my hwy is 23.5mpg. If subaru was smart and put 6 gears in the manual and droped the rpms a bit at high speeds, you could probably pickup another 2mpg crusing on the hwy. What gives??????

I am surprised the MPG is so close between city and highway. My dads 02 saab 9-5 got 21 in town and 28 on the highway. It was a turbo, auto. But it pulled around 2100rpm at 70mph. Come on Subaru............

It took some getting used to for 3000 + RPM took some getting used to, but the passing power is addictive lol. (3000 something at 75 mph (i drive 80, the limit is 75))

+1 I was one of the biggest critics of not having a 6 spped cruising gear BUT your right that instant roll on power is addicitive.:)

They are not using the same ratios as an STI.

I am pretty sure on the 07 spec-B 5th is a lower gear then ours but 6th is higher.

Hate to argue and I wish you were completely right, but:

2007 Subaru Legacy GT Spec.B - The Car Connection

It's basically the same unit as in the WRX STi, with short, precise gates, but it's been modified for smoother shift action and a lighter clutch pedal. Altogether, it works very well with the torque curve of the engine - sixth gear about equivalent to fifth gear on the five speed (which is still offered in other Legacy/GT models), so it allows third, fourth, and fifth gear to be a bit lower. At 70 mph, the six-speed's fifth is noticeably deeper into the engine's power curve than fifth on the five-speed. Sixth is a relaxed ratio for Interstate cruising, though a downshift isn't always needed to squeeze in with faster-moving traffic.
Hopefully it's like 2000-2500 for 70-80MPH, but judging from that snippet, I don't think so.. :iam:

Which means two shifts to get to 60 and four shifts in the 1/4.

The Spec B is going to be slower in the statistics column than the regular GT :iam:

FYI The '07 Spec B 6 speed has taller gearing than the STI.
