mwiener2 Posted May 29, 2010 Share Posted May 29, 2010 You need a vacuum pump to evacuate the system. You need dry nitrogen to purge the system. The actual refrigerant any joe schmoe can buy at the parts store... oddly enough. I have my universal refrigeration license. Automotive is a separate license. I am able to work on a gigantic low pressure chiller that has thousands of pounds of refrigerant in it, usually a refrigerant with a high "bad for the environment" rating. But, I'm not allowed to touch a car which has 10lbs max in it and uses R-134a. The same thing used in computer duster cans. Near zero "bad for the environment" ratings. Don't ask me what genius at the EPA came up with that system. Probly more to keep auto guys from working on the other stuff rather than the other way around.
