OTA Update Broke SiriusXM Station Toggle

Recommended Posts

Hello everyone. I apologize if this is the incorrect section but I am new to the website and hoping someone can provide me with some guidance.

My Car: 2023 Subaru Legacy Premium with option package 15 (moonroof/navigation)

On Monday 3/25/24 I received an email from Subaru that there was a mandatory OTA update being pushed out to my vehicle. Yesterday while driving the "Install Update" prompt appeared and I allowed it to install. I followed the process as described (let it complete the process with the engine on, left the vehicle for a while) and I received a "The update was successfully installed. Current Version:F61WHM043-270" message.

Everything seemed fine initially but then I noticed while driving that the station change forward/back buttons on my steering wheel weren't toggling between my preset SiriusXM stations. To be clear this has been working fine since I picked up the car in 2022 and even the morning before the update. I pulled over to see what was going on and flipped to the "Radio" section on my screen...and noticed when I pressed the forward/back buttons on the wheel that all of my presets had been taken over by the same station. For example if I tuned to channel 8 and selected it as a favorite for slot 1...all of the 6 presets slots would change to channel 8. If I changed to channel 9 and set it as a favorite in slot 2...all of the slots (including #1 which is supposed to be channel 8 would change to channel 9. Thus the forward/back buttons on my steering wheel are technically working and toggling the presets...but I wasn't hearing a difference because they were just toggling around the same SiriusXM station. I also noticed if I set presets on the FM or AM bands that toggling works fine. It seems to be only with SiriusXM presets and only since the OTA update was applied. I have attached a image to provide a visual.

So to my mind it is either a bug in the software or something weird with my configuration. To rule out the latter, I tried a "Factory Reset Data" and also went into Dealership Mode and performed a "Memory Initialization" but neither resolved the issue. So to me it sounds like it could be a bug in the software perhaps for my particular model.

Is there anything else I can try? I really don't want to have to bring it into the dealership (especially if they bill me for something their own update broke). But even if they are able to roll my software back...I am under the impression the update is mandatory and it will just apply itself again eventually... leading me back to the same situation where it breaks again upon install. Thank you everyone for reading and any assistance you can provide.

I had no idea that these OTA updates were mandatory - was there an explanation in the email as to why it was (was it intended to fix any specific fault(s))? I have a '22 and haven't received anything, but mine is a pre-latest facelift model. Don't know if it possible to roll it back and prevent it from being installed again - but definitely reach out to the dealer and report this as a bug, and ask them if it is possbile to roll it back and prevent it from installing until this issue is fixed in the (hopefully) next update.

In my car, just checked and it is -280 version (and it switches between SiriusXM presets just fine). and while I have the "automatically download" update checked off, when I push "check for updates" I get "not connected to internet" message. So it may be possible to prevent an OTA by just keeping your wifi off. Another thing I found on the Outback forum is that the OTA update may not be the "full" (Dealer/OTA) update but rather a "light" version. Maybe installing the full update using the USB method will correct the issue? IMO, you can also go to the dealer and have them reapply the update - the car is under warranty and if there is a feature that the OTA update broke, they should not be charging you for it.

Thank you for the reply @dohturdima

Yeah a main feature of the update was for “SiriusXM with 360L” which is coincidentally what broke. The Subaru FAQ stated I could postpone the update twice but after that it would install automatically and I couldn’t decline it. So I’m pretty annoyed that they broke something which was working fine since I got the car and now I have to try and fix their mistake.

Would you be able to point me in the right direction for the software file? I’m pretty savvy and understand formatting a USB drive and getting into dealership mode and I also believe I am the “High” version (large screen with navigation) and found the Gen6 firmware site…but I’m having trouble parsing the lingo and links as nothing seems to point to the 2023 Legacy and is seemingly for older versions of Outback.

If the dealership is just going to do the same steps (put the software on a USB and update it via Dealership Mode) I’m ok trying this myself but I am afraid of bricking the whole unit with the wrong file.

I thought only the DCA updates were mandatory?  Apparently not!  The software version is weird, though - my car went from F61WMM033-681 to F91WMM053-880.  (I know that 033-270 was an older version, but haven't seen 043-270 - that must be the OTA update)

There is another thread which links to the Outback forum, where a user uploaded the update file on their Google Drive - can be downloaded and loaded on NTFS-formatted 64GB or larger (recommended) USB drive. The steps are described there as well (attached is the PDF with the instructions)

Thank you @DrD123 for the reply and thank you @dohturdima for the link!

I’ve attached some images to show you all a bit more detail where you can see what the update was about and how it can’t be declined. You can also see the picture I took confirming the update was successful with the version number.

Everything with my car was fine before the update on Thursday so I can’t believe I’m the only user with this issue. It’s funny you mention not seeing 043-270 before and that was my initial hunch (there is a bug in this version). I’m not sure how common the USA model 2023 Legacy Premium with Navigation is (being an optional package) and I wonder if the configuration has some quirk different from the typical higher trim levels which contain navigation and something wasn’t fully tested against it. Because the update claims it was successfully installed and everything else appears to be working fine except with SiriusXM which was the core component of this update. And if a Factory Data Reset/Memory Initialization didn’t resolve…I’m not sure how the dealer presumably reinstalling the same software will fix it unless as mentioned they have access to another, updated, version or some way to blank everything/roll me back.

a lot of folks have had the service stop working for a little bit (for me it was a few hours) as well as some or all of the station icons disappearing with the USB update - they come back in a bit (took 3-4 days for me, or at least that's when I noticed all was well) - the thread over on subaruoutback.com has more info/input from folks who had issues
