Mr. Electric Wizard
So I have an upgraded VF52 that was just installed on my car. The stock heat shield didn't work, so it was not put back on the car after the turbo install. What is everybody doing for a heat shield? Cobb makes a flexible one (not like the stock metal one). Max Capacity
All you need to do is cut away a little of the opening for the waste gate arm. Then I used gold foil on the inside. 305,600miles 5/2012 ej257 short block, 8/2011 installed VF52 turbo, @20.8psi, 280whp, 300ftlbs. (SOLD). CHECK your oil, these cars use it. Max Capacity
I even put some on the underside of the GS tmic. 305,600miles 5/2012 ej257 short block, 8/2011 installed VF52 turbo, @20.8psi, 280whp, 300ftlbs. Infosecdad
I went the trifecta route. I have a turbo blanket, then a stock heat shield with a notch cut in the back to ensure the wastegate arm is clear and gold tape like Max has, then an SPT heat shield on top. shralp
Yup OEM heat shield works fine with a bit of trimming. Ran mine for rears while I was running a VF52
Mr. Electric Wizard
My old heat shield was not even bolted onto the old turbo. Also, my mechanic said a "bolt was missing" to actually install it. Are there any aftermarket metal heat shields I can use or should I just look for a good used OEM one? And what type of 'blanket' style heat shield do you recommend?
JoeInOregon
I have the perrin sheild, have not installed yet but it will fit with basically any aftermarket turbo 75 bucks Sent from my Pixel 3a using Tapatalk

Another question. Is the turbo and the heat shield all I need for install, or is there also a bracket that goes into installing the heat shield onto the turbo? Infosecdad
You need the bracket that’s shown in Max’s second picture.
Mr. Electric Wizard
You need the bracket that’s shown in Max’s second picture. Damn. And like 5 bolts and washers. Subie Recycler comes through. They have the bracket and hardware for like $15. Sweet! Building cars is a pain in the ass.

Building cars is a pain in the ass. The two larger nuts/bolts are the top two for your downpipe, so you should have them already. The three smaller 10mm bolts are needed to connect the heatshield to the bracket. Though, many aftermarket heatshields provide the bolts they would use (if you are going that route). Max Capacity
Don't forget to use anti-seize compound, you can see I coated the bolts with it. I got my gold foil from pegasus years ago. https://www.google.com/search?q=gold+heat+reflective+foil&rlz=1C1OKWM_enUS906US906&oq=gold+heat+reflective+foil&aqs=chrome..69i57j0i22i30j0i390l3.6379j0j15&sourceid=chrome&ie=UTF-8 305,600miles 5/2012 ej257 short block, 8/2011 installed VF52 turbo, @20.8psi, 280whp, 300ftlbs.
