Issue with my starter bolt

I’m installing a (my97-98 Impreza)Transmission in my 97 legacy. Here’s the issue I’ve run into. The lower starter stud on my original trans was threaded into the bell housing, and the new transmission has a unthreaded hole. What can I do to solve this problem?

 

Edit: The hole is bigger in diameter than the threaded stud is already.

Get a regular tap and a bottoming tap and thread the hole? If it's a through hole and you haven't mounted it you can skip the bottoming tap.

 

Go to the dealer and find out if it has a press in stud for that application and pay them $50 for a $2 part.

either thread the hole, 10x1.25, or deal with one bolt in the starter...

You're 100% sure of the year on that Trans? Sounds like a Phase 2 trans to me.

What's the TZxxxxxxxx code on the trans = to verify year/application?

I thought it was a MY97-98, now looking again it’s a MY99-01 transmission.

Does that make it a phase 2 transmission? Other than the gearing difference it’ll still work correct?

5-speed should work and be the same FD ratio = 3.9. Check this chart:

As noted above you can usually get away w/using just the one bell-housing bolt.

 

 

I was originally thinking Automatic and that wouldn't work.
