Can I program a new myself?

Recommended Posts

2013 Legacy base model.

Right now I only have 1 key and so I want to get another. I have read instructions on how to program a new key fob, but how about an actual key? Is that an option? I don't have $300 to pay the dealer right now. Was hoping to buy a key online, have a locksmith cut it, and program it myself like I've been able to do with other cars. Any ideas?

Thanks!

Note that the key is comprised of three parts: the mechanical key with housing, the lock/unlock transmitter with buttons, and the immobilizer chip. If you are shopping for a second key online make sure you get all three parts. The $15 eBay keys likely don’t include all three.

I only paid $65 to program my keys at my local dealer, have you verified the price with them it sounds exaggerated. If that is the price for the key and programming that's a different story.

I purchased my key precut by an online subaru dealer, I don't know if they still do that, but an automotive locksmith should have the capability to at least cut the keys.
