Stalling issue - anyone else!?

Recommended Posts

Hey guys!

I need your help here - I have a 2012 Legacy and have been having this problem when I come to a quick stop the car will shudder and try to shut off. Has anyone else had this issue?? It doesn’t always happen and usually after driving it for 15-20 min it won’t do it anymore. Wondering if I’m the only one that’s experienced this? What could it be? What should I do? Bring to dealer to diagnose? Thanks!

How many miles on the car?

I wonder if a new torque converter is in your future, tsb 16-90-13R. I don't know enough about fifth gens to say, but that's the first thing that comes to mind with the little I've heard about them.

If you can repeat the shudder, look at the tach the next time. If it drops by about 50rpm its normal. My 2012 2.5i 6MT did it from day 1 (it came and went depending on the time of the year and weather) and their was even TSB about it.

If drop by more than that, it is likely the torque converter for the CVT sticking.

Thanks yeah I just came across that bulletin as well and am wondering if this is in my future as well! I’m at like 175k miles but this has been happening for a long time. It comes and goes so I’ve been dealing with it more or less but I think it’s time haha. I heard they extended a warranty but I never got notice of that - so maybe I’ll write to them and hope to get some covered.

Yeah read my P0171 post from a few days ago, pretty much the same issue I had. I'm guessing the check engine light should come on soon and it'll probably be the same code

Tbh I’ve been dealing with it for like two years at least and it’s still fine so....more of an annoyance and I’m afraid of what could happen. I’ll try and see what tach does next time. I’m usually focused on letting off the brake because that will usually push through the shudder and not cause it to stall

Sounds like 5thgencvt might've had tsb 11-160-15 done, there's a pdf about it when I plug that into google. Doesn't hurt to check and see if that's been done brian

Also, did you clean upinside the maf sensor 5thGen? The two little resistors, not the red part on the outside of the maf sensor

Thanks for the reply! The first thing I’m actually going to try is cleaning the MAF sensor - hoping that’s it. I know I’ve never done it so.....

Here's a pic of the maf sensor resistors in the second pic, and a vid where a really smart dude recommends brushing them off too if possible.

I watched a video and it looks like even a rookie like me can do it! I’m going to get some MAF cleaner and sucks it’s so cold here right now but I think I can do it. I’ll be sure to let you know - I’ve heard of people writing to Subaru and them helping with payment a little bit on the bulletins of out of warranty. My family has driven them forever so worth a shot if it comes to that fingers crossed on my MAF

Yeah I did it was one of the first things I did along with replacing the air filter but it didn't work for me. I got the check engine light soon after doing that
